    CD only - USA Teacher

US Teacher: Balance is noticeably different right off the bat with the USA Benefit CD.
    Keyboard Left original USA CD

With certainty they all have different sound quality:
Keyboard right MU, MFSL, Benefit Remaster, & 2CD The Best Of Jethro Tull Anniversary Collection Original Mixes

I was speaking of CD only.

Teacher was remixed with echo for the 25th anniversary - are you saying that the 20th anniversary was also remixed - there is no note of this on the box about remix - it says 1970 B side UK single.

Excuse me here as I have never heard the vinyl of this.

Adding echo could be considered remastering rather than remixing.

The Teacher with major echo is derived from the USA release. It is on the disc titled Remixed Classic Songs 25th anniversary box. The echo on the British/European mix on the 20th anniversary box is less.

  5. Tracks still unique to the 20th anniversary box:

    Disc one
    Radio Archives and Rare Tracks

"Grace" – 0:42 (BBC version according to credits, but I am not convinced)
    "Coronach" – 3:51
    "Aeroplane" – 2:17
    "Sunshine Day" – 2:25

    Disc two
Flawed Gems and Other Sides Of Tull

"The Chateau D'Isaster Tapes" – 11:12 -this edit mix is unique

    "Saturation" – 4:20
    "Motoreyes" – 3:38
    "Blues Instrumental (Untitled)" – 5:17
    "Moths" – 3:26 (remixed)

    Disc three
    The Essential Tull

"Farm on the Freeway" (live)– 6:48
    "Thick as a Brick" (live) – 6:39
    "Sweet Dream" (live)– 4:35
    "The Clasp" (live)– 3:31
"Pibroch (Pee Break) / Black Satin Dancer" – 4:02
"Fallen on Hard Times" (live)– 4:00
    "Wond'ring Aloud" (live)– 1:54
    "Dun Ringill" (live)– 3:05
    "Living in the past (live)
    "Teacher" (Original B side)– 4:48
    "Aqualung"(live) – 7:44
    "Locomotive Breath" (live) – 6:00

This was a bonus on the most recent War Child.

My LiTP album (book cover) is the same as #2 above.

BTW, there are three guitars, left, center and right. The LiTP mix has a slightly different balance on the guitars, and more echo on the flute part at the end of the chorus. The vocals sound kind of shrill and sibilant on my copy of Benefit (Reprise) and are smoother on LitP.

Please, for those with the Benefit & Living in the Past LP: The keyboards are left or right on the vinyl? Thanks.

pbuzby is confirming keyboards right on Living in the Past LP. Right? :D

Yes, keyboards are left of center on Benefit and right on LitP.

  10. It figures, the one remaster I didn't double check...

"Teacher" also runs a few seconds longer on LitP than on Benefit.

OK, so I think there are 6 versions/mixes of Teacher available:

    Version 1 (UK/European single version)
    a) 1969 stereo mix found in UK & France 45s
    b) 1969 mono mix found on other Euro 45s

    Version 2 (US album version)
    c) 1970 mono mix found on US reprise promo 45 (possibly a fold down?)
    d) 1970 stereo mix on US Benefit album
    e) 1971 stereo remix on LITP double album
    f) 1993 stereo remix on 25th Anniversary box set.

The mix differences between the US Benefit Teacher and the LITP remix other than the extended run out on LITP (extra 15 seconds) can be particularly heard around the line "then a teacher told me/it had been a lot of fun" around 2'49" into both versions. There is a prominent extra guitar riff over the vocals on the '71 remix which is barely audible on the Benefit mix.

If you have the DCC gold CD of Original Masters the booklet show a photo of the master mix tapes used for Steve Hoffman's CD remaster project, some of which were the compilation tapes of the LITP album dated late 1971 if I remember correctly.

It's likely that quite a number of tracks (if not all) on LITP were remixes made in 1971. Does anyone have the time or inclinataion to check them all out with an original vinyl copy? ;-))

Well, I can say that "Song For Jeffrey" and "Witches Promise" are remixes. "Bouree" I think is the same as on Stand Up. Haven't checked "Hymn 43" yet. Were the other single/EP cuts mixed to stereo before this album?

My God, I'm glad I'm a bigger fan of later Tull these days. Thick As A Brick and later recordings, to not ummm worry too much about this. No wonder I'm driven to play Close to the Edge. Yes.

Good luck, I look forward to the chaos. Inside is a good example of mastering choices. Like the almost buried cymbals of Inside on the MFSL Living in the Past CD compared to the more pronounced cymbals on the USA CD of Benefit, Benefit remaster, & Original's box. A lot is revealed in the various releases of Tull just by listening to the cymbals.

Love Story, A Christmas Song, Living In The Past, Driving Song and Sweet Dream had all not appeared before in stereo. Singing All Day was an unreleased track from the October 1969 session that produced Sweet Dream, 17 and Play In Time and therefore no other mixes were available. Just Trying To Be and Wond'ring Again were recorded in June 1970 and also had their first release on LITP.

Also interesting to note that the June 1970 session was really the first attempt at recording the next album which would eventually appear as Aqualung the following year and an early version of My God was recorded with Glenn Cornick on bass - now that would be worth hearing if it still exists.

"Hymn 43" was not remixed for LitP as far as I can tell.

Hello, it sounds like #3 is the most common.
Keyboard right on "MU" Best Of Jethro Tull, MFSL, Benefit Remaster, & 2CD The Best Of Jethro Tull Anniversary Collection Original Mixes.

I'm liking the original CD "MU" Best Of Jethro Tull sound for Teacher as it is the least aggressive mastering.

I have the original USA issue of "MU" and it does sound pretty good.
