isn't the version on the 20th anniversary box set a remix with added reverb???

i'm pretty sure the actual b-side UK version in it's original mix has never made it to CD (same thing with witch's promise if i'm not mistaken)

There are several "Teacher" 45's that have been pressed with different flip sides. Is this single version available on any cd?

The first version of Teacher (referred to as the UK single version) is a completely separate recording to the version that appeared on the US Benefit album and I believe was recorded along with The Witch's Promise in December 1969.

Actually this should be referred to as the 'European version' as this first 'mellower' version of Teacher was used on all of the single releases across Europe in early 1970. Also interesting to note that the Witch's Promise/Teacher single was released in the UK very deliberately in stereo (adverts for the single made a big deal of this at the time) whereas other European releases were mono (possibly fold-down)

Tho mono version of the euro-single Teacher was issued on the 20 Years Of... box set but did not appear on the remastered Benefit despite the cover claiming to include the 'UK version' as a bonus track. As others have stated this is actually the heavier US album version. Who the hell puts these CD compilations together? Surely it's not beyond EMI to task someone on their payroll to get these things right? All they have to do is ask for help or advice on a forum like this and they would get all the knowledge and research they need in an instant for free.

Anyway the stereo version of the mellow Teacher still remains unreleased on CD but original UK single copies are easy to find on ebay. The stereo mix of Witch's Promise may also possibly be slightly different to the mix that appears on the LITP album from 1972.

The piano is on different sides on these two. The vocal placement in the mix is not the same. Apart from the differences they are the same.

Many tracks were remixed in 1971 for the Living In The Past compilation album released the following year so there may well be a number of subtle variations in mixes to be found.

The UK single version of Teacher wasn't included though, dropped in favour of the US album version.

    Hi Darcy,

We've traveled this path before. Nice to see someone paying this much attention to the old Tull.

Apart from the differences they are the same.
sign me: Dizzy :D The beat goes on, the beat goes on...

  9. I'd need to check again, but I am also reasonably sure that it (the 20 Y of JT version - I have never heard the 45 RPM single of this one) is the same recording, and not a different one. Just mixed very differently. From my last spin I think the pitch is altered.

Yet another detail that gives so much more distinction to the US (and modern CD) album version is the prominently mixed bass guitar in the introduction. AFAIAC, this hook becomes an actual distinctive signature of the tune.

The French pressing was also in stereo.

Yes. Please compare both and acknowledge in this thread if they are different or the same on your CDs :).

I don't pay attention to mixes, really, and just want the music coming out of my speakers to sound good. I just happened to A/B "Teacher" to find the one that sounds best and heard the differences. If I listened to "Living In The Past" one week and "Benefit" the next I wouldn't have noticed -- no "mix memory" here (not enough interest).

    jethro tull - teacher - i'm confused

I've been listening to the flat sounding Teacher on the Japan/Canada (VK 41078 DIDX 403) M.U. best of Tull the most lately. Keep it quiet, it sounds good with surround modes.

Great. Doesn't this make four versions since the mixes are different? Your post implies they are the same which leads to confusion.
I try to forget about it and each time I get pulled back in :D.

Just thought I'd chime in and say that the US version KILLS the earlier UK version. They got it right second go round, imho.

The Living In The Past version is :righton:. Third times the charm. One of the reasons to get the MoFi (just don't get rid of the US Chrysalis CD).

The version of "Teacher" on Benefit sounds flown-in and out of place on the album. I prefer the UK version of the CD for tracks (not for sound).

    All IMO.

Four versions, that's a big responsibility. God is an overwhelming responsibility. We'll need to get Ian Anderson's approval.

    For future cut&paste:
CD versions of Teacher - *The pig whisperer affect:
Teacher #1 is found on CD only on the 20 years box.
Teacher #2 This is the most common form of Teacher - piano: left of center (between the bass and guitar) vocals: center and right guitar: left bass: center second guitar (that comes in at the vocal): right - found on North American Benefit - #2-eh *MoFi (& remaster bonus track):piano: right vocals: center guitar: left bass: center second guitar (that comes in at the vocal): right
Teacher #3 is remixed on the 25th box set Classic Songs Remixed

I try to forget about it and each time I get pulled back in: too true I hope I've got this right.
    I agree.

I love this song. It makes me smile every time I hear it. Thanks for the mix...I hadn't heard that. I never thought about picking up that box set because I have all their albums...maybe I should? Anything else good on it?

  23. There are tons of things good on it!.... The only problem is, beside that old Teacher, many of the otherwise unavailable tracks are now extras on the individual remastered album CDs... Now anyone else better qualified can chime in with what's left that one can find ONLY on the 20 Y of JT box?

Myself I am highly impressed by the extra material culled from the War Child era and from the Broadsword era. Finished masters, of releasable quality, of terrific songs!

    shouldn't this read
Teacher #1 b-side of witches promise 45 vinyl
    and
Teacher #2 remix of #1 found on 20 years box.

    and then 2,3,4 would be 3,4,5 ????

I'd ask Ian if he were not a concept by which we measure all things.

There is also the bonus track on the "Benefit" remaster which, if I recall correctly, is a slight variation of #3 (or is in now #4?).
