Ian Anderson tonight!

i've always been a big fan of early tull, 67-71. i saw them in 70-71, again in 75 and 93. really though i only listen to the early stuff. my wife likes them too and ian anderson is playing nearby so when we heard about it, decided to give him a try. from what i can see on the various sites, it looks like it should be pretty good. i'll report back soon.

I'll be curious to read your reports. I've not seen Ian Anderson solo but I've seen Jethro Tull in concert a couple of times recently. Tull still put on a solid show, but Ian Anderson can't cut it as well anymore from what I've seen.

Sounds like it will be a great show ! Who does Ian have on guitar for this tour? I was wondering Martin Barre was playing with him maybe?

Interesting. I didn't realize this was a full band solo tour. Florian Ophale is the lead guitarist in Greg Lake's live DVD. He's pretty good! And maybe all of 20 years old too.

Florian Opahle Born in 1983, Guitarist Florian Opahle from Rosenheim, Bavaria in Germany, is the youngest regular musician to work with us but by no means any less talented.

His musical interests cover contemporary Rock styles as well as Classic Rock, Blues and Jazz as well as Classical music. After a rigid music education background (including master class instruction from guitarists such as Al DiMeola), young Florian has worked in a number of live acts and in studios in his native Germany
He has toured throughout Europe with female vocalist Masha, and in 2003, he began working with Jethro Tull front man, Ian Anderson, in his solo band and orchestral projects. As guitarist on the "Ian Anderson Plays Orchestral Jethro Tull" tour, he performed in Italy, Greece, France and Germany with Anderson's band and a full orchestra. The tour has since been captured as a home DVD release.

In the Autumnal months of 2004, Florian returned to his work as a recording session player, contributing to the latest album by Italian artist Alessia D`Andrea, recorded in Calabria, Italy. Shortly thereafter, he was invited to join The Greg Lake Band for a tour in 2005.

Appearing in Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, India, Hungary, Iceland, South America, Russia, Germany and the UK with Ian Anderson during 2005 and 2006, Florian remains a regular visitor to the touring ensemble.

it was a very enjoyable show. great variety of material spanning much of tull's catalog. serenade to a cuckoo with a mention of r.r. kirk was excellent. among others and in no particular order were; bouree, mother goose, aqualung, my god, fat man, jeffrey goes to leicester square, jack in the green and more i'm forgetting at the moment.

One doesn't often think of Ian Anderson, longtime frontman of classic rockers Jethro Tull, as understated.

Anyone who's seen Anderson during the band's 40-plus-year reign knows that prancing, dancing, twirling and shouting are as much of Anderson's onstage persona as his raspy voice and signature flute. Yet when he speaks of his own shows, whether it's with Tull or a solo effort such as he's now embarked upon, he's surprisingly understated.

"It's a good idea not to expect anything," Anderson said. "We're liable to do anything, so it's a good idea to keep an open mind."

In this age of bands promoting their shows and albums in every medium available, Anderson lets his classic, Grammy Award-winning catalog do the talking. "Living in the Past," "Cheap Day Return" and, of course, "Aqualung" are generally staples in any Tull or Anderson show.

But Anderson is a smart showman who doesn't coast on his laurels. He not only weaves newer solo songs into sets but reworks classics, often with the help of classically trained, young violinists he brings on tour.

"Acoustic is my forte, what I do best," Anderson said from his London office. "It's what I intended to do as a teenager. I didn't like loud music; I liked jazz and blues."

That preference is something he's integrated into rock shows dating all the way back to the 1970s, when Tull often traveled with chamber orchestras and solo violinists. About five years ago, though, Anderson again incorporated young guest musicians into concerts.

Fan Rob Graham said those guest artists add extra effect to the show.

"Not only was the combined sound fresh, but the energy was over the top," Graham said of the Anderson solo concert he attended in Concord, N.H. "I can only imagine the thrill most of these [young musicians] had being able to play along with a legend in front of a live audience."

But Anderson said he gained as much from the young musicians.

"[Playing with them] is a learning experience for me, seeing what I can get out of it," he said. "It's a mutual thing."

That quest to continually improve is what fan Tibor Shanto, of Toronto, thinks sets Anderson and his bandmates apart.

"When you listen to some of the old songs on the [rereleased "Living with the Past" DVD] versus when they first came out, his playing now is so much better ... [and] continues to demonstrate his growth as a musician," he said. "Few in rock continue to do that."

There are a pair of long-ish new pieces he's playing that are getting a good recaction-- apparently very vintage Tull sounding. Haven't heard em though.

Saw this tour in Los Angeles and we both thought it was simply EXCELLENT!

I actually even liked that he did some of his band member's music, came off really well.

I would go see him again in a minute, it was very relaxed and enjoyable...more than the last Tull show I saw, which was far too mellow.

Saw him at Chastain Park in Atlanta and it was excellent. Simply amazed by how he is still bopping around the stage like days of old. Keep on keeping on Ian.
