I can think of several CDs that feature additional artwork hidden under the tray, including:

    Pet Shop Boys / Very

Radiohead / Kid A (an entire booklet is hidden under the tray on early pressings)

Any other examples? What about artwork hidden somewhere besides the jewel tray? Any examples from the LP era?

There is a thank you message from Paul and Gene to Ace and Peter under the tray in the Kiss My A** tribute album.

The Flaming Lips often have messages written on the underside of the side labelling. The Yoshimi one will make you laugh (I won't spoil the punch!)

There's the somewhat notorious case of the artwork hidden under the tray and behind a card with its own very faint erotic drawing in the package for John Zorn's "Taboo and Exile."

Tripping Daisy's "I Am an Elastic Firecracker" has the lyrics to the preceding album hidden behind the casing.

The Green Album also has the word "No." on the inside spine of the traycard, as a response to the hidden message in the same spot on Radiohead's OK Computer.

    There's a booklet there?

I see some hidden artwork, but it doesn't seem thick enough to be a booklet, not that I've actually pried it open to see...

I bought my copy on the day of release.

I bought mine on the week of release and it had the picture, but not the book. However, prising the tray off, caused it to crack, as it wasn't a normal cd tray, but was made of a brittler material to give it that gloss black finish.

Took me ages to find a tray of similar style to replace it with.

You should check. The extra booklet is... odd.

Long time reader...seldom poster because I never have anything interesting to add, until now!

Some copies of Sonic Youth's 'Dirty' feature a disturbing image under the disc tray of performance artists doing...dirty things to stuffed animals.

I bought the disc in 1992 on day one and was swapping the case a couple of years later when I found it...yuck.

Indeed, my copy came with a cracked case so I discovered the photograph when swapping cases. I'm surprised anyone printed it, it strikes me as child pornography.

The On The Corner box by Miles Davis has elements of the original album cover inside the metal case that houses the metal-spined book containing the CDs and artwork.

I remember that too... it was limited to the first pressings of the cd's. The tray was like an orange-ish color. Kind of weird to see for a 16 y/o kid in the Bible belt. :)

I'd forgot to have mentioned The Byrds' CD Reissues in the '90's-some of them had the original Lp Back cover on some of them, while others had Advertisments from various sources in the inlay trays.:righton:

This is a great topic, I've got a few of these discs and never knew about any of these hidden pictures.

Was Dirty limited to only the 1st pressing? My tray is a standard black one but maybe that's the way they came up here in Canada. I do have that disgusting little picture underneath it though.

I have a copy of Phil Collins' Face Value where the back cover artwork is printed on both sides of the insert.

Yeah, Zorn has used some pretty shocking and transgressive images on his albums (mostly violent ones), all right out there in the open, but this is the one thing that actually skirts (or goes over the line?) of illegality. The faintly drawn upon card that covers the hidden image actually makes that image seem even more explicit than it might otherwise. Not that it doesn't have that on its own. The photo is by the respected, although often controversial, Japanese artist and photographer, Nobuyoshi Araki, so perhaps that affected how the printer felt about it. Perhaps the legal standards in Japan are different than they are elsewhere? In any case, I've never heard of any legal issues being raised.

The Chicks on Speed compilation "The Re-Releases of the Un-Releases" is in a mini-LP format with drawings and all of the liner notes printed on the inside of the sleeve.
