This can't be true, I hated my original BENEFIT. I like the remaster much better.

Teacher was poor on the original.
It's much better on the Benefit remaster, polished brighter. I don't mind it at all.

Well, at the risk of jacking up the price of yet another old CD, here goes:

The original UK CD release of Aqualung (Chrysalis CCD-1044) is just fine.

It lacks the "solid feel" of Steve's DCC version, mind you (for a variety of reasons), but if you can't afford the DCC gold disc, and want a CD that sounds a like a lot of the LP versions available at that time (i.e.- it lives higher in the mid-range), then this is the disc that you're looking for.

I don't know what they did here in the US, but I don't think this disc exhibits **any** of the commonly-cited faults of the first American CD version: nothing appears to be clipped short, and there's no excessive hiss. It seems to be a totally separate mastering.

    Any other comments, anyone?

    -Kevin

I agree, as it seems to be the one in the 1994 Chrysalis 25 blue box (celebrating Chrysalis Records) issue.
Yikes, $39.99 in Canada at time of issue. CDP32 1044-2
 That's why I wasn't looking for another Aqualung...

This is...flat compared to Aqualung's MoFi tracks on Living In The Past.
The rising keyboard on Locomotive Breath stands out more on the MoFi.

Cool. I have a mint copy of that and the original German version I both picked up a few months ago, but have never listened to them. I better find it and pop it in.

How about the rest of it? (teacher is available elsewhere, so I'm more concerned about the album as a whole.)

(therockman - I searched the archives and most of the comments seemed to favor the original, from people who directly compared the two. Most of the catalog seems to be a personal opinion thing though, between the originals and remasters at least, and even incluing the some MoFis.)

    Benefit original CD.
Seriously, years ago; I suppose  I was listing to Teacher and I tossed this one.

Link to a better Teacher original M.U. will do the trick.

Benefit is in dire need of good mastering.

The whole tull catalog is a shame. They will end up doing it right when the one's that care are dead.

it won't matter anyway, as from what we're told, the tape at least for Aqualung is in bad shape...

Bump - any more thoughts on Heavy Horses? Wondering if there's any kind of consensus on that one.

I have the original U.S. Chrysalis and it won't win any awards. It's a little bass shy and thin sounding, but I've got no other versions to compare. You may want to check out Roland's Tull thread if you haven't already. . .
