the recent thread on the PBS special reminded me that I've been thinking about finally getting this album on CD, and was wondering which version was best. My local shop has the original ATCO and the Rhino deluxe for the same price. Any opinions as to which has the better sound?

I like the 17+ minute version on their "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" LP (1968).

Then there's the 13 hour version with the 7 hour drum solo. Real bottom of the bongwater stuff.

Never heard any of them but Bill Inglot unearthed the actual master tapes so if his name is on it, that's the one to get I reckon. The earlier original ATCO might be neat as well and possibly uses the same tape. Gotta try them and see which is best to YOU.

Personally my old LP is good enough for those "moods".

I'd also like to know. Are there not 2 Rhino CD releafses? One with just the album and a later 1 with bonus tracks? I'm used to the bright dirty quality of my old vinyl but it would be nice to have on CD anyway.

I believe he's looking at the two "standard" CD releases. I'm guessing the Mofi CD will be hard to find.

The Rhino CD release with the 3D cover was remastered by Bill Inglot (and Geoff Sykes.)

    I have both...

The MFSL GOLD CD is better than the Rhino CD

Yup, I should have paid closer attention. My bad.

I don't have the Atco CD. I do have the '95 Rhino with the 2 "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" bonus tracks (live & edited). If the Atco has the same tracklist as the LP I'd go with the Rhino for the extra tracks... I'm listening to it now and it sounds pretty dang good to me.

What the heck, I may have to dig out "Manhunter" tonight just for the creative use of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in the climactic fight scene.

:righton: I agree. I don't recall the specifics but I only kept the MFSL.

The Inglot master from 1995 w/the 2 bonus cuts is the one to get.

It blows away any cd version!

Back in the day, I had a friend who had this album on reel-to-reel.

I swear that there was an extra 30 seconds or so in the drum solo on that version. I don't know if that was a mistake in the tape mastering or what - I think the time listed on the box was the same as on the lp, but not when we listened to it.

Anybody know if I am remembering correctly?

Did anyone else besides me buy the 45 of Da Vida back in the old days just to see how they could've possibly knocked that thing down to 3 minutes?

I did. In fact, that's the version I still prefer.

Also had the killer Atco 45 of UNCONSCIOUS POWER b/w IRON BUTTERFLY THEME. Good in mono.
