My preferred version of this is the current remaster. I've not heard too many others, but this is the only one I find somewhat appealing.

I just got a copy of the MFSL from Ebay for $60. Hopefully, that's a decent price. Of the 2 other versions I have, I prefer the version that comes in "The Originals" box set. Not loud...nice midrange. The remaster here is a bit loud and a bit smiley faced.

Again, my preference is the version that comes with The Originals. It might be the UK Chrysalis that you speak of, because it does sound a few cents slower on certain tracks, than other versions. But, it does have the original running order, which I like. The problem with the US Chrysalis, is that it sounds like a poorly edited mulit-generation LP master. Listen to the very first note of "For Michael Collins...". The initial attack of the acoustic guitar is completely missing compared to all other versions. It seems as if they went in between songs and tried to "clean things up".

I have to go with the DCC here. I have never heard this album sound so good. Steve really rescued it, and thankfully was persistent enough to wait for the master tapes.

I am pretty sure this CD has pre-emphasis. EAC might not show it (says there is no pre-emphasis), but when you rip the files to wav or mp3 and play them back on the computer or on a CD-R with the PE flag not set, it does sound much much brighter.

    OK, Roland.

:shake: EAC is not reliable? (says there is no pre-emphasis)

I have the original USA Stormwatch - I'll need to revisit this, again.
Broadsword And The Beast WG CCD 1380 has good sound when turned up loud, the USA CD had sound issues, the same poor sound issues as with the USA Minstrel In The Gallery. :)shh: read the web)

I decided on some of these Jethro Tull CD issues more than a decade ago. (Sans remasters)

:yikes: The Aqualung remaster has been in print for 10 years. NUTS!

The question as to why others like the Thick As A Brick remaster - for me it's the vocal, I just like the sound of the vocal.
:D Though, believe me, the MoFi Thick As A Brick is in heavy rotation 'round here.

    cheers!

I just did some more critical listening for this album tonight. As I already mentioned, the Japan for UK version without pre-emphasis is way too bright for my liking.

I personally prefer the German Chrysalis version with catalog number 252 662. I think it sounds great, not too bright but plenty of detail. You can hear some tape hiss, and it sounds very open and natural to me. It has the breath of life which is missing a little bit from the UK Chrysalis (the one with PE).

I will still have to compare it again to my friends US Chrysalis version.

I also heard the remaster before, and it was way too bright for my liking.

All in all, that German Chrysalis is a nice version to have in my opinion.

These peak levels are identical to my UK Chrysalis 32 CDP version. Just like with "Songs From The Wood" the UK and the US Chrysalis have apparently the same mastering. Still need to find out for "Heavy Horses". Anybody has the US Chrysalis and could check the peak levels? I don't have the UK Chrysalis anymore, because I preferred the German Chrysalis.

    Roland,

 I'm glad I kept the USA Stormwatch CD.
I've never heard the original USA HH. The WG HH (sold it:hide:) was too dull sounding for my taste.

    Happy New Year

I don't have a WG Heavy Horses, just a regular German Chrysalis 252 666. Are you referring to that one? It doesn't sound dull to me at all. Nice and warm, nice detail without sounding goosed in the EQ department. In case you're used to the sound of the remaster of HH - which is quite bright sounding in my opinion - you might think any of the original releases sound a little dark.

If you want me to post a sample of the German Chrysalis, please let me know.

Happy New Year to you also!

I'm referring to the HH WG CD that was intended for the UK market.
This title was really lacking when compared to the Canadian vinyl, which has great sounding bass, that put me off the CD right away.

I put in the :hide: hide because I would like to revisit this title.
My opinion on this is a decade old by now.

BTW: I had the same view of the Stormwatch CD and it was you that caused me to revisit this title with ummm "new" ears. I thank you for that and overall I'm revisiting the original CD's because of you. So there you go. :)

Owais helped me on Stormwatch. At first I thought the German Chrysalis was better than the UK Chrysalis. He told me he thought the other way, and I did revisit the two versions based on his remarks, and now I like the UK Chrysalis (which is the same as the US Chrysalis) better than the German Chrysalis (which is also not bad but sounds a little goosed up and a tad less natural),

Owais also told me that he prefers the UK Chrysalis over the German Chrysalis for some other albums (Too Old To...; Heavy Horses), but my preference remains for the German Chrysalis for these two albums even after another comparison.

Gentlemen, I have U.S. Chrysalis discs of HH, Stormwatch and a few others. Are you using EAC to post peak levels? Is that a free download? If so, I'd be happy to put it on my machine and post a few peak levels to add to the discussion.

I haven't played much Tull in awhile, but I don't recall thinking too much of the sound of Stormwatch. . .

I recently received the MoFo "Living In The Past". I think my expectations were a bit too high based on what I have read about the MoFi and I am a bit disappointed. It is more detailed than my Chrysalis, but doesn't have the warmth of the Chrysalis and sounds a bit clinical to me at times. I like Anderson's vocal on the Chrysalis. I'll have to spend more time listening to both of these...

I like the U.S. "Stand Up" more than the U.K. version (who mastered these?). I'll keep my U.S. copy and skip the MoFi.

Sorry to threadcrap but since you are talking about the Heavy Horses album, was Acres Wild remixed on the remastered CD? Supposedly it is missing some string parts. There was some talk on the Jethro Tull forum about this, but nothing conclusive. I've never heard it myself. Am I crazy or has anyone else heard of this or heard it himself?
