Is that 'missing' as in lost from the original material, or 'missing' as in somebody fumbled the ball more recently?!

The MCA Trespass is not that big a compromise. Get it, and if you find you really listen to it a lot you may find a V/C later on. It IS fun to do comparisons. I've been working on my Genesis collection since the new SACD's came out and this thread started, and it's been a blast.

Right now, I'm really interested in --

Abacab -- does anyone have more info on differences between the early pressings? Did BD do a remaster at some point, like with Face Value?

Three Sides Live -- this is one where you pretty much have to get both the US and UK versions, but what songs from which would make the ultimate playlist?

The Pigeons EP -- no one has hardly mentioned it, but the mini-cd V/C is crucial in my estimation. Inside and Out is one of my favorite Genesis songs, ever!

As to the DE's of W&W and ATTWT -- I agree that they sound better than the other DE's, but I'm still interested to hear more opinions on the Atlantic and V/C, or is the jury in on them?

Finally, is the hum on Lamb present on the LP? Is it missing from the DE because of NR?

Got it! As it turns out, that's not such a big issue as most people cannot hear absolute phase.

It's slightly more complicated, there are two versions of GECD 2002 (the European CD cat. no.), one with the studio tracks (on Vertigo) and one with the live tracks (on Virgin).

I prefer to listen to the V/Cs for both (and I have the Atlantics and DEs too).

...he said in post #893!

(Great thread, both in volume and content!)

BTW: Congrats on the V/C W&W, Matt!

I have that! There was also a standard cd-size release of that. I wonder if they're any different?

    Hi.

I seem to remember mastering this, and it actually says so on the CD liner album credits (not that we can trust this means of indication ALL of the time, as we have seen here before....)

Great job, Zal! I listen to that one a lot! The DE doesn't hold a candle to it.

Anyone know how to differentiate original vs later versions of Abacab?

Thanks TJ! I'm bowing out of the Trick race until another one comes along. ;)

We have both of these, and I still need to find out if they are different. Will try to do that today!

Dave-- to my knowledge the hum was not on all the LPs. I definitely have at least one vinyl pressing where it is absent. Will report back on that later too!

The hum is definitely not present on my original yellow-label Atco US pressing, for whatever it's worth.

My list for beginners (aka Don't bother worrying about specific pressings unless you're nuts):

FGTR - London or Rock Machine or DCC
    Trespass - V/C
    NC - V/C
    Foxtrot - V/C
    Live - V/C
    SE - V/C or Atlantic
    Lamb - V/C
    Trick - V/C or Atlantic
Wind - Buy the LP and forget it.
    SO - V/C by a landslide
    ATTWT - V/C
    Duke - US WEA Atlantic
    Abacab - V/C
3SL - Atlantic or Vertigo (same) for US version, V/C for the UK.

    Can't help beyond this point.

A couple of comments on Jeff's list:

You can add "or Atlantic" to this one too. They're basically the same.

I would say, "Buy the V/C and see how you like it. If you don't, get the LP."

Good list! I can't believe what we've been agonizing over for months is so easily summarizable! :p

I'd say Atco for Trick, but I haven't heard anthing else except clips. I think the V/C Duke pressing is better than the Atlantic. Didn't also someone point out that phase is wrong or the channels are inverted on the Atlantic for Duke?

As was pointed out a few posts back, the Atco is simply a copy of the V/C but has some clipped samples and has had varying levels of gain adjustment applied on a track by track basis. If you really want to hear this properly, you need the V/C. The Atco still sounds good, but the dynamic contrast from track to track has been altered.
