I think the US and UK LP's are incredible, and better than the hailed Japan pressings. On CD another area of preference, The original first issue EMI/Harvest Japan black faced, and UK silver faced versions beat them all, including the MFSL set.:agree:

Yep. Me too. Still prefer the current version available from Japan, though -- more slam where it counts & airier highs too.

Isn't the current Japanese version the EMI/Harvest Doug Sax remaster from 1994?

Absolutely! and, for the cognoscenti far superior to the old Columbia stuff. I don't intend this to be further discussion on this topic, but the sacred cows on this forum ended up dead last in a shootout for local audiophiles where 7 different pressings were auditioned. The decision was unanimous. For the poster above asking how to get one of these, try Amazon.

Was the current EMI-Japan issue of The Wall different sounding than the readily available U.S. 1994 remaster? Just curious.

Yes, but the differences were very small. Depending on the resolution and spatial capabilities of your system, the $75 - $100 prices that sellers want who have the Japan release for sale might be ridiculous. I would not have spent the money except that I was really curious about this, and had decided to take a listen to what others were touting as the best versions. In the end, I would recommend the Japanese version to someone who owns very high quality transistor equipment, and the USA Capitol to those with tube audio sound.

I subjected the various listeners in my experiment to just a few selections from the set: The helicopter sounds that precede "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" (track 4, disc1) along with the instrumental intro that immediately follow the helicopter. Finally they heard all of Track 5 ("We Don't need no education"). The group thought that the voices of the children in Track 5 was slightly clearer on the Japanese version compared to the USA Capitol, and that it was just slightly "softer" sounding. In all other respects, the conclusion was that the USA copy was almost identical, if, perhaps, very slightly more compressed. In their opinions, these two were superior to the 5 other versions I had; 4 of which were Hoffman forum sacred cows. I ended up selling those 4 losers to those here at the forum who wanted them. I kept the two others that didn't sell, so I have a total of 3.

Thanks for the info all of you. I saw the Harvest/Capital at Borders today and almost purchased it. I will probably purchase it next week with the new Harry Potter novel. I have a 30 percent off coupon to use by 7-31-2007.

For my stereo system I think the 1994 Harvest/Capital is perfect for me. My stereo system is good but not great.

I have the Australian EMI Disctronics pressing of the 1994 remaster of The Wall. It sounds pretty good, but the original UK Harvest beat it badly in the dynamics and high-end extention department. The upper mids were kind of compressed as well, in comparison.

Is this also the same as the mini-lp sleeve Japan version?

I can't help you with that, Mr. Hi-Fi. Mine came in a double jewel box from an Amazon Seller for $75, but was listed along with those in the mini-sleeves. I can't say if the pressings would be the same or not, but at the high prices these go for, I'm not about to try to find out.

As noted above, the currently available Capitol USA provides about 99.5% of the sound of the Japanese version. Depending on your system, that extra cost might just be a waste of money.

I see the new sealed MFSL from post #5 is over $265 with 4 days left.

That must be a record for the Wall... Someone must really want it.

Losers! I love it. I've never heard anyone call the sacred discs on this forum losers! I had bid on the above Wall longbox set before I had money troubles. It sounds like 18.00 well spent! :goodie:
