Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I suppose we have to believe what they have written about this release. Maybe they used the artwork from the cd. The classic vinyl is not loud at all.

Here is a quote from the classic records website:

Deluxe 4 LP box set edition of this great compilation previously only available as a two CD set includes four studio sides and four live sides along with a 12 page 12" x 12" color booklet filled with pictures and an essay by Kurt Loder. This issue was compiled from the original analog masters and mastered and cut by Bernie Grundman on Classic's "all tube" stereo cutting system and pressed on 140g RED vinyl! These babies are RED HOT and include all the biggest songs - Purple Haze, Foxey Lady, Stone Free and all the rest! (also available on Classic 200g Super Vinyl Profile pressings)

The still have dishing a plenty. They certainly haven't corrected that problem.

All I can tell you is that George Marino is given credit for the mastering. Classic records is credited as well.

Anyone have an opinion on the 200 gram pressing of this title for sound?

I have the 140 gram set, which sounds really good. The live tracks are the standouts here. Incedentally, Michael Fremer has a review up now on his musicangle website.

Whose initials/signature is in the runout grooves on these? Is it Bernie Grundman or George Marino? Have we got any confirmation whether these are analog or digital masters?

FWIW I think some of the live stuff on Disc 2 is recent remixes. I want to say that the 2 Winterland tracks, the Randall's Island Red House (first released on the '82 JH Concerts LP w/ loads of echo) and the Maui Foxy were remixed for the Voodoo Child collection CD. If these tracks are in fact recent remixes I would think they used digital master for the Classic set..

If this is the case, then Classics Records downright lied on their promos.

I've heard a friends 140g red vinyl on several occasions and it sounded wonderful. I ordered mine this last Wednesday.

They were remixed. But isn't it possible that the mixdown masters were recorded analog ?
Eddie Kramer, after all, is an expert on analog recording.
The fact that he approved all of the digital masters of the EH releases still puzzles me, though.

I picked up the 200g version of the box set at a Coconuts store that carries limited vinyl - and as others are saying...... this box set sounds great.

I just got my copy of the 150 gram's 4lp box.

I'm playing side 5 + 6 now, and my first impression is not a good one.
The sound is cold (digital sources, I'm sure) & not very dynamic at all.
Bernie Grundmann cut the records, but I don't think it's his fault.
The problem lays wih the sources he had to use.
A quick comparison of Dolly dagger with the RL cut Rainbow bridge makes it all too obvious that this is not the audiophile masterpieces that Classic and EH want us to believe it is.

Also, the record is noisy, but a guess a good clean could improve that.

Here is a picture of two complete 'Dolly dagger' waveforms.
First the one from the 4lp box, then the one from the 1971 1st pres of Rainbow bridge.
Both are flat transfers done with the exact same equipment.

To be honest, those look pretty similar to me. Almost like they could be the L-R channels of the same thing.

I have the colored vinyl box as well. I haven't really had the opportunity to give a good listen, let alone compare it to original LPs. But it sounds pretty good to me although it might lean, as you say, toward a colder sound.

just did a needledrop of three recent versions of Spanish Castle Magic.
go easy on the drop, it's my first time doing one, bloody computers.
sorry the clips are chopped off a bit.

can everyone open .aiff files? i can't seem to export anything else.
they work in quicktime i'm pretty sure.

for me, i tend to like the first the most and the last one the least. the second sounds like a totally different mix to me, there's a clue right there. anyways..

The Japanese does sounds like a totally different mix. Interesting.

I like the last one as well, the mono mix definitely kicks, but the first sounds pretty good as well. I was thinking getting the box set, so I appreciate the sample.

FYI, the three drops weren't in the order I wrote. I was hoping someone would have a crack at guessing which one was which. the order was, from what i can remember:
    Classic Records Mono
    Voodoo Child Boxset
    Japanese Universal

i still like the mono the best. (is it just me or does the boxset version sound a fraction faster?)

The Beave My Wife Is My Life! And don’t I forget it!

My copy on red vinyl has a capital 'BG' hand scribed into the deadwax. Although the booklet says it's George.
