So far, the only disc I have this on is "The Definitive Collection" (single-disc edition). Is it in better shape elsewhere? Has this one been remixed like some of the other Motown hits recently have?

The best way to hear this song is M-O-N-O, the only version CD version of which is on the Rhino box Beg, Scream, and Shout.

Is the mono version significantly different or does it just have more "ooomph!"?

does it say who mastered this? I have another Motown disc titles "Love Songs - 20 Classic Hits" mastered by John Matousek at Motown Hitsville USA Recordingt Studios, Hollywood. California. It has the same song selection as the one Steve posted, but the cover is different.

"Love Songs", also available from BMG (for the moment anyway - they've been cutting-out some Motown selections).

Steve, you gotta remaster this song someday...only you can tone down that ear bleeding harmonica!

    Then, get the MONO mix!

Trust me! The MONO mix beats the stereo mix any day.

Problem: The MONO mix can only be found on the Beg, Scream & SHOUT! boxed set, which is OOP, but can be found used in many places, and is available on iTunes.

"Love Songs" is the best stereo Stevie I've found. I need to get that "Beg,Scream & Shout".

My copy is the same black cover as yours, but mine was pressed in Japan and features a hidden track of "Stay Gold", the theme from the Francis Ford Coppola film "The Outsiders".

I also have the MONO version on the "Beg, Scream & Shout!" box from Rhino

    Good stuff!!!

The mono single mix is the one to get, but as Grant points out, is only available on the OOP 'Beg, Scream & Shout' box set. You might be able to get one second hand or if your lucky, an unused sealed set but it will probably cost you a fair few quid!

As for a remix, an instrumental only version is available on the 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' DeLuxe 2 CD set, and like the rest of the instrumental remixes, it really kicks ***!

    Cheers

For those who can wait, the mono single is coming soon in the continuing CD series "The Complete Motown Singles Collection".

My pal Jamal, proprietor of Village Music (CD store), came into possession of a used copy of the Beg, Scream and Shout! box set, with the front latch broken off and no book. With that info fully disclosed, he sold it on-line for $200.

Wow. I saw a used one in Amoeba a couple of months ago for $70. Maybe I should have bought it and turned it around for a profit. (The latch wasn't broken and I assume it had the book since the box didn't contain a sticker indicating anything was missing, something that Amoeba typically does if a package is missing something.)
