It seems like we want to know the same things, Eddie I see you on the CSN thread too! Now if only somebody would actually answer our questions...
It seems that question was answered in another thread. It turned out some stereo only fans (multi-channel bashers) who bought the stereo only version started the rumor about the SACD with multi-ch also had a new (inferior) stereo layer. The claim took hold for a year of so, and many people were fooled into searching for the stereo only issue of the SACD Tapestry. But when the very few who owned both really listened and compared, none could hear any difference. The liner notes implied there was a remix, but someone at Sony (forget who) stated surely that no remix in stereo had ever been done. Grab those multi-channel SACDs anytime you can, those will be the most in demand in 5 to 10 years, mark my words.
Do the Tapestry SACDs contain a redbook layer? (Apologies if this has been answered 200 times before...)
I do. Haven't compared it to SACD, don't have it. The 45rpm l.p.'s kill the normal 180g. l.p. if that's any help.
From the back of the "Tapestry" MC SACD: Original Recordings Produced by Lou Adler Engineered by Hank Cicalo 5.1 Surround Mix Paul Kingberg At Glenwood Place Studios, Burbank Ca Assistant engineering by Kentaro Takahashi Mastered by Steve Hall at Future Disc Systems, Hollywood Ca SACD Stereo Mix Production by Bob Irwin Engineered by Bob Irwin and Vic Anesini Mastered by Vic Anesini, Sony Music Studios, NY Authored by Woody Pornpitaksuk For Sony Music Studios My 2 channel stereo only SACD sounds the same as the 2 channel stereo on my MC SACD. If there's a difference, then it's beyond my ability to hear it.
I asked Rob LoVerde he asked Vic Anesini if he'd ever remixed this album and it came back that there had never been a stereo remix. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=43089
I've been meaning to get this SACD and was confused also. The 2 channel is hard to find. Well, maybe not that hard to find but getting the catalog numbers correct was difficult. I had to ask a seller to verify the correct number, which was time consuming and tedious. So basically, once and for all, either the 2 channel SACD or the 5.1 SACD will have the stereo mix that Steve was recommending. Correct?
This thread should be permanently archived as a classic example of people believing what they read without ever examining for themselves. I'm laughing at the older posts in this thread describing the "differences" between the 2 mixes, when in fact there aren't any. An absolute classic example of the "groupthink" that is so pervasive on this site sometimes.
And the bottom line is, if you are multichannel capable, this is a great surround SACD. Demo quality imho.
Yeah, I hunted down one of the stereo-only discs about a year ago for the "differences." No big deal. This forum is responsible for my collection sounding as good as it does.
Yes, yes and yes. Probably the only people who want you to believe that there is any difference are sellers on eBay.
I was at Best Buy this morning and saw the sacd of Tapestry and carried it around the store for about an hour before I put it back. I just had a feeling that this isn't the version that I want. I can't tell you how many times I passed on the real single layered stereo sacd because it was four or five dollars more than other sacd's that I wanted at the time. Now it looks like I'm gonna pay a lot more to get a copy of this.
There's plenty of the multichannel ones still at Best Buy. Are you still wanting the stereo-only version?
Yes. That's what Steve is saying here. That the one available now has a different stereo mix that isn't as good as the original single layered stereo mix.
You haven't read this thread very thoroughly. What they are saying is the stereo version on both disks is the same thing.
I don't read this a Steve saying that the current stereo/multi version is a remix. I read it as him asking a question. there was this reply: I haven't head the stereo only version, but I would imagine it's the same.
Why did Steve say in post 1 that if you want to hear the original mixes you need to find this single layered sacd ES 65650 Sony/Ode/Legacy He thinks the current disc out there is a different mix.
AAARRRGGG!!! This is one of those issues that's going to end me up in the looney bin. There is NO difference between the stereo only first issue SACD and the stereo layer on the second issue stereo/ MC SACD. If you want the stereo mixes that SH recommends, buy the stereo/ MC SACD and play the stereo layer. There is no need to pay more for stereo only first issued SACD.
No, never heard the second. I guess either will do. I was told that the second was a re-remaster and different from the first but if you guyz say it's the same, well, it's the same. Remember, not the greatest mix in the world (ya think?) but basically untampered with..
