It, too, is part of the $7.99 at Borders. So, my question is...

How does the CD sound? It's not "remastered," and from my experiences, most reissued material on Columbia/Epic/etc. released back in the '80's seems to have pretty bad sound quality.

But, of course, it's all a game of hit and miss.

Anyone have it on CD? I've heard excellent reviews (not to mention I've heard plenty of his other music), and I'll pick it up so long as it sounds good.

Well its got Mediterranean Sundance, who cares how it sounds. Just joking. I didn't even see this one. I will go back and take a chance for the $6 and let you know. Guess I should look at that list of what's on sale better.

Well, it's not marked. Or, at least it's not up here in WA state. Instead, on the CD rack with the $7.99 sale CD's, it says that ALL "Nice Price" and "Best Value" CD's are on sale for this price.

Needless to say, Elegant Gypsy has a "Nice Price" sticker on it, so it may not be marked, but it's still for sale.

Has this CD NOT been remastered for a Columbia/Legacy version?

I have this CD, and because of an earlier thread I started, I thought this had been redone. That's why I haven't yet opened it... if there was a Legacy version, it'd be easier to rid myself of it now and find that one...

Nope, at least not domestically. I've seen some imports for a remastered version on Amazon, but they're a little pricey for my taste.

'Ey, that's alright, man. I picked it up yesterday on a whim, fearing the sale wouldn't last much longer. I haven't listened to it through a good set of headphones yet, but sound quality is only part of the experience. First and foremost, it's the music that counts, and Di Meola has never bored me.

So it is ABOUT the music for you. Big KUDOS. That being said, why don't you tell me what you think about the sound just for my information. I am going to pick it up regardless because i want to also, but i am interested in your observations.

Well, it's mastered at just the right volume for these ears, headphone wise. It's doesn't sound compressed, which is good, and looking at the waveform, it's definitely not volume overloaded, which is another plus. EQ wise, it seems to have fairly good overall balance. Definitely better than most pre-Sony CBS related CD's, although I'd say there is an emphasis on the midrange EQ's, though not to the point where it's harsh or bothers me. Just seems that way, I guess.

Overall, not bad. Like I said, seems to be one of the better CBS issues of the late '80's. A little midrangy, I think, but not too much. Just a little.

I have a beautiful JSACD of "Elegant Gypsy" that is just, dare I say, "elegant". Imported from Japan at some expense.

I'll echo Metralla's sentiments: the Japanese SACD import is exquisite.

I lived with the domestic cd for well over 10 years... it's decent sounding. But the SACD absolutely shines. Everything just opens up. Reverb tails sound airy, magical. The kick drums sounds like a real kick, has that subtle warm ring trailing off. The kick on the domestic is kind of a thud.

Anyways, get it!

Afraid not. It's on SME Records (Sony Music Entertainment, Inc) and is housed in a normal jewel box. There is no sleeve (cardboard or plastic) like one sees on the domestic Sony SACDs. The front cover is just like the CD, and on the back cover there is some Japanese writing on the right hand side. The back spine is normal; the other spine has Japanese writing. You'd have to look hard to pick the differences. The CD itself is slightly distinctive, as it appears gold with black writing - a small Super Audio CD logo. The metallized surface is not gold though.

In summary - it's a single layer stereo SACD.
