Yep, I would end up copying music files to playable discs. Why? Because I have several systems around the house. Having disc copies sort of defeats the purpose of a server. I would still need storage room.

Dartira, do you know if it will support DSD via USB?

As messed up as the music industry is right now, I wouldn't be surprised if this actually happened  because anything that makes sense is seemingly tossed out the proverbial window, I guess since greed & short-sightedness rule in so many corporate boardrooms (if an entire country can be nearly brought down by shady mortgage deals, just about anything else is possible ).

Thanks for the headsup - I'll check them out.

    I would doubt it.

I think that is what all the BNC connectors are for, but I am not familiar with outboard DSD converters. Hopefully others will chime in.

I've just found the information confirming that it will do DSD over USB and FireWire, nice!:thumbsup:

This whole topic is depressing. First we lost the LP, now they are crying the demise of the CD. I'll remain an anti-digital holdout, or simply stop buying "new" music if I can't find what I want on at the very least, compact disc. What idiots ...

    Hiro,

Sorry I didn't catch your question.

Yes, as unlikely as it seems, the documentation says it will do that.
I'm not sure how DSD over USB would relate to the real world though.
Anyway, Mytek make excellent converters, IMO.

Speaking of this, who sells a *transport* that would send the DSD data to the DAC?

I believe DSD files will be played through USB and/or FireWire interfaces from the hard drive (without a traditional optical transport).

Get a DSD recorder and create your own, you'll never look back.

Why is this depressing? It is just technology and time moving on. I can appreciate enjoying vinyl or CDs, I certainly have over the years. The sound of digital files done right, like vinyl done right, or like CD done right might just surprise you. Why would you consider giving up on something you apparently love simply because of the medium that delivers it? That is the part I wouldn't understand.

    O.K. thanks.

Actually I'm surprised Sony/Philips haven't allowed the DSD format to be used in easily-transferred file form (easily-transferred = no DRM, or whatever is used to copy-protect sacd discs).

The big question at this point is if and when we will get access to a meaningful number of those digital files done right and priced right.

I'm curious how DSD can go over USB when most converters are having a hard time with 24/88.2? and 24/192?

DSD is only one- bit technology so it needs to support 2.8224 Mbit/sec

I know little to nothing :) about USB specs, but I think 192/24bit PCM is quite close to DSD as far as data density is concerned, and since coaxial digital outputs on conventional dvd players can handle stereo 192/24 PCM, maybe they - and USB - could also handle stereo DSD?
