If anyone saw the review of this unit in Stereophile and was curious,

http://www.simplifiaudio.com/room_correction/dspeaker.html

I got one and it works as advertised for a budget price.

One caveat:
It is designed for a single Home Theater subwoofer output, so if you plan to use it with your stereo linestage you will need to also buy their adapter. It's a Y-adaptor with a resistor built into it. If you just use a plain Y-connector, it will mono-out your mains also, since dual line-outs are normally just paralleled. Their special Y-connector preserves stereo to your mains. The catch is their Y-connector is $100.

Still, at a total of $450, a good deal for what it does.

I just did a search and could not find a single thread devoted to Peter Murphy. Any fans here?

During the first half of 1990, I just thought his album Deep was one of the best things out there. This prompted me to go back and pick up Love Hysteria, which I found to be wonderfully enigmatic, moody and mysterious. I had been a Love & Rockets fan for a couple of years and though I had heard a little of Bauhaus' stuff, I found that I actually liked the splinter groups of L&R and Pete Murphy more on the their own: the parts were greater than the sum, I suppose. I'm listening to Love Hysteriaright now and it sounds as good as it did 20 years ago to me.

Fast forward to 1992 with the release of Holy Smoke. I tried throughout that entire summer to get into HS, but I just couldn't do it. It didn't seem to have the naturalness (for lack of a better or real word) that Love Hysteria or Deep had -- it felt a little forced creatively. Maybe it was too dark for my tastes. Now, I never made a vow or anything to write off Murphy but for one reason or another I never picked up another album...just drifted into other stuff.

Did I make a hasty call with Holy Smoke? Are there other albums of his that have been produced since then that are worth checking out?

Lower resistance by screw-down or solder?

I'm making a better rig to measure amplifiers.

- At the test resistors, the connection is screws into metal tabs.
- The tabs are I forget what, but a colleague said not solderable, so the wires are attached with ring terminals.
- From the test resistors, wires come up to banana plugs. Why bananas? Long story, but basically to be able to change from 8 to 4 to 2 to 1 ohm quickly and easily.
- Then there is a kind of breakout box. From the banana jacks, soldered wires will connect to the amp.* Jumpers will connect to another set of bananas to attach an Audio Precision and oscilloscopes.

The wire ends from the resistors are screwed down into dual bananas. Solderable tab bananas are available, though rare and expensive. If I go to the trouble and expense of getting and soldering those, will it decrease the resistance a bit? Or not really compared to the tight screw-down?

*Some amps have screw-down terminals, some have the insert-bare-wire-into-the-tunnel-and-screw-down type. (Car amps, anyway). Any thoughts about what to use on this end that would work well with both? Current default idea is just solder stiffened ends.

Hi, I've been delving into Duke's work this past month (mainly his 50's & 60's recordings) I'm loving it! It amazes me how much he composed. I would love to get an insight to his creative/writing process---so a bio that focuses on that would be ideal.

Also, the earliest CD I own/heard is "Ellington Uptown". I've heard there is a plethora of great music prior to this recording. Can anyone recommend a few titles from his earlier years on CD. So far my favorites are:

Ellington Uptown
Count Meets the Duke
Newport '56

According to Revolution in the Head Ringo should be on the left in stereo.

I checked on you tube re: Brubeck and he appears to be correct.

What other commercially released concerts filmed by NFL Films that are not Superbowl half-time shows are out there?

There’s a 'sound' reason there hasn’t been a concert at Miller Park in Milwaukee since the 2003 Springsteen concert. It’s because people fled there holding their ears as the shrill sound caromed off the retractable metal roof, and waves upon waves of echo made it beyond unlistenable. It’s a baseball park and nothing else.

So, why is Farm Aid 2010 scheduled there?

Neil’s playing in Milwaukee tonight. Maybe I should head down there and ask what “Because Sound Matters” really means.

Rega P5 (PS Audio Hum Problem)

I recently bought a PS Audio PCGH to replace my Music Hall phono stage and I'm having the dreaded hum problem. It's only on the right channel and I've made numerous attempts to fix this problem myself. I'm using this to connect to an Apogee Duet to my laptop. The hum is not very loud, but it's loud enough to hear during quiet passages after doing a needledrop. What I've tried so far:

1. Switching cables (Monster Cables), I have three pairs of the same set I bought in the nineties. I'm almost positive they're shielded and I've never had hum problems with any other equipment using them.

2. Since Rega tables do not have a ground I improvised and tried to make one, to no avail.

3. Switched the power plugs around.

4. Took all other units out of the room to see if there was a conflict.

5. Took off and reinstalled the headshell.

I'm beginning to think maybe this combo Rega P5 /17d3 is simply incompatible with the GCPH. Any suggestions?

Robert Pollard- Moses On A Snail- Magnificent

Hi, I've listened to Robert Pollard's new one, Moses On A Snail, four times in a row now, and like a great new guitar amplifier that gradually loosens and opens up after decades of use, this album sounds better and opens up its treasures to me the more I listen to it. There are no short songs on this one, no eccentric snippets, just 12 traditional well formed songs.

It's funny. If The Who or Led Zeppelin or The Stones released an album like this, the headlines would read, "They're Back!" but this will merely be another excellent Robert Pollard release.

The album closes with the title track, a five minute epic with a stunning hard rock instrumental outro. Damn I'm glad I spent $11 on this one. Well worth it. It's a treasure.

A lot of Stones tracks I can't bear to listen anymore but I never get tired of hearing some of the songs Keith Richards sang lead on,some of them very funny and very true.So what is your favorite?

1."Happy" I love the opening to the song and how its from the point of someone who's done everything wrong in their life yet redeemed by finding that special person-always puts a smile on my face listening to it.Probably my favorite Stones song of all.

2."Before They Make Me Run"-very funny yet true song many can identify with as life goes on.

3."Little T&A" -As I am now in middle age I appreciate this song much more than I did when it was first released.

4."You Got The Silver" a great sing along song from my favorite Stones album all things considered.

I'd love to see a comp released of all the Stones studio tracks he sang lead.

Your faves?
