Any advice on cost-effective tools to align my cartridge on my turntable? I just looked at one on amusicdirect.com and I was a little startled when I saw that it was $149!

I bought one at Audio Advisor several years ago for something like $19. You might want to check their site. It may appear on their "Tweeks for under $20" [or something like that] page.

Enjoythemusic.com has a simple two point alignment protractor that is FREE !

Get it from one of the listed distributors or print it yourself from their PDF.

I would strongly recommend the inexpensive mirrored one from Turntable Basics (http://www.turntablebasics.com/). Unlike many others, it allows you to set alignment AND overhang properly, and easily. I couldn't be more pleased with what it did for my Rega Planar 3/RB300 and Dynavector 10x4.

I also found a penlight and a magnifying glass invaluable while using the protractor.
