View Full Version : Need Help with Odd Problem

For kitchen listening, I assembled a (relatively) cheapo system consisting of a Kenwood "K-Stat" AR-404 receiver (supposedly 100Wx2), a Technics SLPD-9 CDP (5 disc changer), a pair of old Sony speakers, and a Technics TT.

Here's the problem: when I play classical CDs, everything sounds OK. But when I play jazz or rock CDs, the sound seems very distant, voices are faint and hard to hear, to the point where such material is not listenable. Even seriously cranking up the volume has little effect.

I bought the Kenwood because it has a phono stage, and the TT sound OK when played.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem is?

I have no idea!

Did you try plugging the CDP into the Aux. outlet?

I agree with Gary.

It sounds like you have the CDP outputs plugged into the wrong
inputs on the receiver.

Speakers wired out of phase, perhaps?

To Both Garys:

I had the CDP plugged into the CDP outlets on the receiver, as per mfr directions; seemed logical to me.

Tried your suggestion, and plugged the CDP into the AUX outlets of the receiver, and, "Eureka!," it worked; now it sounds just fine. Perhaps there was a compatability issue at work here between the two components, or perhaps a problem with the CD path on the receiver (?).

In any event, I really appreciate your help and am glad to have the stereo back in order. This forum is Way Cool! :D
