My wife and I are continuing to get settled in our new house. Like everyone, it seems, we have a pantload of pre-recorded VHS movies. These are primarily mainstream American films. There is little that I think anyone would consider obscure. Seeing as we rarely watch VHS tapes nowadays, we are thinking of dumping them at the local Salvation Army. This seems like a reasonable move since there appears to be no market for the majority of pre-recorded VHS films.

Before we dump them at the Salvation Army, I would like to know if any VHS tapes of mainstream films actually have collector value. The only tape that I am definitely keeping is Eddie Murphy Delirious since it has not been released on DVD. Perhaps there are mainstream titles that have not made it to DVD, have deleted scenes that were never transferred to DVD, etc. Are there some titles that I should hang on to?

Thanks!

P.S. We have a lot of tapes, and it would take a long time to provide a list here. So, I realize that I am leaving this as an open-ended question, but I am hopeful that you folks can help me out. :)

What about Magical Mystery Tour? There are some unique Ron Furmaneck stereo mixes on there... I guess they're on the LD too.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Anything that has not yet made it to DVD surely offers some premium. IIRC, I've seen episodes of "The Wonder Years" on VHS go for 30+ bucks.

Also, people seem to like VHS box sets. This is not a blanket statement, but it seems as though many of them are more difficult to find than singles.

Just my 2 cents; I haven't owned a VHS for around 10 years now.

Thanks, guys. Most of the titles listed here are music-related, but what my wife and I have are modern movies. I don't think we have any box sets, either.

A bit obscure, but a number of the Doctor Who VHS titles are highly collectible.... basically, those that haven't yet made it to DVD (and there's a huge number that haven't).

Thanks for the additional replies. My wife has some of the Doctor Who VHS tapes, and she had already planned on keeping them.

Why not buy a DVD recorder and transfer them to disc then dump them? This is what I am in the process of doing right now, in fact, since I just got a DVD recorder.

My suggestion is, find out which ones are available on DVD, then either keep or transfer the ones that are not.

I have a movie taped off of AMC, "The Killers"(from 1946)that was never available on VHS or DVD.

I may do that in a year or so when I get a DVD recorder. I have a lot of stuff I want to archive and just be able to play again...LDs, and a few VHS tapes I never got on LD.

"URGH! A Music War" is probably the only tape I have that is of value. And no, I'm not parting with it. :D

Yeah, this is one reason why I am doing that. I am finding that tapes over ten years of age are not playing as well(maybe they need to be baked :D )....

For example, I have a ton of Laurel and Hardy stuff taped off of AMC ten years ago that is not available on DVD.

Another thing I just transferred is the Ron Furmanek VHS Magical Mystery Tour(the best version ever issued on home video).

Is that the one with William Conrad as one of the killers? If so, it is out, I think on Criterion.

We don't really need a DVD recorder. The video quality on the burned DVDs would not be as good as what is on (most) store-bought DVDs. Plus, the burned DVDs would lack a surround track. For common movies, we have no problem replacing videotapes with store-bought DVDs. However, if we have some rare videotapes, we will keep them.

The Cure In Orange

this is especially a keeper because the LD of this omits the outro/end credits music (chiffons' "sweet talking guy") even though it is listed on the sleeve

as far as I know, the VHS is the only version that has it
