Best SACD/DVD Player < $300

Hi,

I'm looking to buy my brother an SACD/DVD player for under $300 for X-Mas. My brother is easily pleased when it comes to A/V equipment but I still wanna do him right and get the best I can for the $. What is considered the best player in this price-range?

Yeah, Sony was what I thought people would say. They have lotsa model #'s, so I was hoping some of our Forum friends would have some model # recommendations.

I have the Sony NVS-500. Nice player, $179.00 at Best Buy.

I'll second that emotion. Bonus: redbook play through the 5.1 analog outs beats my $1000 Toshiba 9200!

The Philips SACD 1000 is currently available new for as little as $399.
An outrageous bargain, this machine cost $2000 just two years ago!

Is that Philips deal at Tweeter only? I've already got a Sony C555ES, and I couldn't be happier with it. But even though I didn't need DVD playback, had the Philips SACD-1000 been priced that low when I made my purchase, I would've had to give it a serious look-see. I've heard it before, and was mightily impressed. My only real question would be "how good is the Red Book playback?" as that's still a huge issue for most of us.

In short, Jeffrey, my fellow deadhead, if you really love your brother, check out that Philips 1000! It just might be the deal of the year.

Saw Tweeter $399 price virtually the day after I paid $550 for one sealed.
Lots of them on e-bay and audiogon now in the $400+ price range. Have only had mine a week or two, not even burned in yet? Reviewers in Sterophile and elsewhere have praised the redbook performance, I have not formed an opininon as yet, too soon. One odd thing about the unit is that I can not use the digital out to feed a DAC for redbook, apparently the co-ax out is only for DVD-Video, dolby suuround, etc. Pat.
