View Full Version : Arcane Sony PCM-601 question

Someone posted recently that while the original VCR-based semi-pro digital recording devices, such as the Sony PCM-F1, recorded at a sample rate of 44.056k, in order to mesh with the video frame rate, the Sony 601 actually recorded at the now-standard 44.100k, running the VCR slightly fast to make it work. That means that when you play back a 601 tape it actually plays a little bit slow and comes out at 44.056k. Now if you transfer this into your workstation, you just change the sample rate to 44.1k, without doing any kind of conversion, and it comes out right again.

What I want to know, though, is if you have the 601's video output connected to the VCR you are using for playback (a Beta machine in our case) will the VCR lock to the 601's video and play back at the original, slightly faster than normal, speed?

And while we're on the subject, I do have a number of old Beta-based tapes that I should transfer to CD before they fall apart, if they haven't already. It would be nice to be able to start things rolling and walk away (I'm not doing Steve H. level work here!) but those things are so prone to digital dropouts -- does anyone know of a handy (cheap or free) utility that can automatically flag spots in the recording where there was likely to have been trouble?

Thanks
