Long story but I picked up a used Music Hall MMF7. It came with a felt and a fancier mat. Seems the previous owner smoked.

It took a couple of days to get the table and the cover cleaned enough that I couldn't smell it anymore.

However that fancy mat? Nothing I do, seems to work. It just keeps on stinkin' like a rendering factory.

Anyone recommend a decient table mat?

A good thick rubber mat that deadens the ring of the platter and record. No felt mat (even over a rubber one) is effective. Find an old turntable that is out of order so if the mat will fit right for your needs. Technics in the 70s made nice thick ones.

if you change mats, make sure and check thickness. If it is different than your felt mat, you will need to readjust VTA... Fortunately that's easy to do on the Music Hall tables.

You might want to try sealing the felt mat in a big bag containing a generous supply of kitty litter. I've taken the musty smell out of old books with this method as the litter is highly absorbent. It takes about 3 weeks.
By the way, I've used an antistatic felt mat for years on my expensive Technics turntable and it far outshines the supplied rubber one.

Just curious, how did you get the kitty litter out of the felt mat, and away from your record surfaces?

Oh Yeah, and Jean Luc was the BEST captain....
Even though Kirk nailed all the space babes.

I used a vacuum cleaner set at the lowest setting to get the kitty litter off...no problem at all!

I bought a Micro Seiki, and the previous owner put on one of those rubber bubble mats. Supposed to eliminate dust, but actually was a dust magnet. I put the thick rubber mat that came on an old Technics SL-1900, and it works beautifully. Nothing fancy, but works like a charm.

People seem to get good results with the Herbie's mats, but I haven't tried one. Not vey expensive.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I just may have to try that kitty litter one.

I've tried soaking it in Fabreeze but the mat doesn't absorb any liquid....

I think they look a bit cheap, but I'm using one on my Rega with great results. I like the way it grips an LP without being sticky and it also helped minimize some of my static problems.

you can try anything really. some people have tried kitchen cabinet liner (those sheets you put on the shelves of cabinets). you'll just have to try some mats. no one can recommend and know how it's going to sound in your system.

Sorry, my bad.

Our cat is named "Chester". I stuck the mat in the box his "litter" stuff comes in. I'll let it do it's trick for a few days and see if it can draw the odor out of the mat. If not, I'll get a new one I suppose.

Sidenote. My wife thinks I'm nuts.

You could also try baking soda (The Arm & Hammer Flo-Thru boxes that you use in the fridge.), I find it very effective in helping eliminate the musty odour from older records.

This sounds all too familiar...

I'm using a Funk Achromat (5mm) on my Linn. I just received and installed it last Friday. So far it's a keeper, the improvements that I can identify are, solidity of images, prat, and foot tapping. No downsides so far.

I've dealt with Herbie's before (not for a mat, though) with excellent results.

Maybe on a DD 'table. But on a belt drive 'table, that heavy mat may cause speed variations and belt slippage!!!

I'll probably get gorted for saying this, but I think that somebody that has a CAT complaining on and on about somebody that SMOKED is hilarious.
