View Full Version : Energy Veritas vs. Legacy Classic ??

I had the chance to do some serious speaker auditioning this weekend. First I listened to Martin Logan Aeons at Tweeter. They were powered by the B&W Reference 50 preamp/processor ans B&W Reference 200 7 channel amp. Then I went to another store and listened to the Energy Veritas V2.4 powered by the same B&W system. Then I went back to listen to the Martin Logans.

I was amazed by how poor the Martin Logan’s sounded. They had a nice soundstage and nice imaging, but they sounded lifeless, almost muffled.
On the other hand, the Veritas sounded alive. They made music sound like real “music”. I played Steve’s Buddy Holly CD and Buddy’s Stat had the great “clean, bell-like” Fender sound. Plus I heard something during the guitar solo, which is made up of three parts that I never heard before. During the rhythm section of the guitar solo I heard a strange squeaking sound that is difficult to hear on the Martin Logans. The squeaking must be from the drummer’s hi-hat. The hi-hat on my drum set squeaks a times.
I have eliminated the Martin Logans. My final comparison will be between the Veritas ant the Legacy Classic or Signature III. I know that Legacy speakers are favouites of many on the message board.

Your comments would be appreciated.

John,

I own the Legacy Focus. I would steer clear of the Classics. While they are good speakers, I did not care for their tone. The setup I listened to reminded me of some of the Thiel speaker lines which are definitely an acquired taste IMHO. I have not listened to the newer Sig III's. The Sensible Sound folks gave it a great review a few issues ago. Legacy used to tout that the Sig III's were 80% of the Focus sonically, but, at 2/3 the cost. I did not find that to be the case when I bought my Focus. I hope this helps.

Larry,

The Focus look like they are great speakers, unfortunatly they are a bit out of my price range. Thanks for the info. Now I won't need to drive 90 minutes to audition the Classics.

John, they are a chunk of money to be sure. Please let us know what
you think of the Sig III's. I have a friend that is thinking about buying the Sig III's.:)

I found the Legacy Classics more to my liking than many other speakers in their price range - including B&W. Certainly B&W makes some great speakers, but you'd need to spend a lot more on that brand to get equivalent or better sound. I've not been overly impressed with anything they make for less than 5K in terms of overall value.

We all have different preferences. That's why so many speaker manufacturers survive - there's no ONE best. It's worth a drive to check out the Classics - whether you like them or not, at least you'll know. They are not "warm" speakers; they do have good detail (using same mids and ribbon tweeter as Signature last time I checked), and can really put out some low bass.

Johnny, have you listened to Definitive Technology speakers. They have an excellent reputation for home theater and sound great with music. Barretts carries them.I think the closest one to you is in the Mall in Carpentersville.Music In Motion on Halsted south of I80 also has them. They are worth a listen.Good Luck.

They're just fine - for those who don't know much about audio and don't care to learn.
:p

Ha! Still around, ain't they?
