Did Microsoft discontinue support for HDCD in it's WMP? I had it in version 9, but it doesn't show up when I play an HDCD encoded disc in vers. 10.

Play a HDCD-encoded CD using Windows Media Player v.10, press "Pause", then press "Play" again. HDCD logo should show up.

HDCD's....were/are they only a WB product? I only have a few and they are all Mark Knopfler solo albums, 4 I think. I think the new Neil Young Greatest was HDCD too. I think these sound pretty good compared to your average CD... how are they doing these days?

Several years ago, Microsoft bought Digital Microsonics and incorporated the decoder into their WMP.
Anyone who pays the licensing can encode their music with HDCD.
The Warner Group of labels do seem to have issued the lion's share of HDCD encoded titles.

If that doesn't work, skip to the end of a track and let WMP go to the next one. The HDCD light should go on. After that, when you skip to other tracks, hitting pause should work.
As for being WEA, off the top of my head I can think of the Hendrix disc (Polydor) and the Beach Boys catalog (Capitol). Oh, and a lot of Grateful Dead stuff (WB/Arista/GD).

No, it's still not working, and it doesn't sound like it's decoding in HDCD. I'm playing Joni Mitchell's "Court & Spark" remaster. It is in HDCD.
It's interesting that only ONE R&B title I know of has ever been issued in HDCD: Chaka Khan's "Epiphanny: The best of Chaka Khan Volume 1".

I noticed it not working on mine as well when I upgraded to WMP 10 recently. Used the Doobies AF gold disc. :agree:

Cuz that's the way "the man" wants it. :shh:

Worked OK for me with Court and Spark. I did the Pause then Play and the indicator came on.

Oops! I'm using version 11. Damn.
I guess when you're dealing with betas, all bets are off.

The HDCD light has never showed in WMP reliably for me. Tapping Ctrl-1 then Ctrl-2 a couple of times usually makes it come on though, without having to pause and restart the disc. Another way to check it's working is loopback record what is going out to the soundcard and take a look at the waveform (comparing it to playing the CD through some other software player if necessary).
Remember to turn 24 bit decoding on too :)

11 has it too. Well, it's not showing up. There is absolutely no mention of it in the help.

You probably don't have 24 bit turned on.

Go into Options in the WMP. Go to the Devices tab. Highlight Speakers & click Properties. Check the box for 24 bit audio. Click on Apply and/or OK. You now will have HDCD.

You beat me to it.
Now, can anyone figure out why Microsoft stuck this option two layers deep, in the Devices-->Speakers tab rather than, say, in the 'Performance' tab.?

I now hear HDCD sound, but still don't see the logo as proof.

Pause it & then start it up again. The logo should show up on the bottom left.

That worked for me after changing the settings.
Thanks. :)
I also checked a couple other settings... Crap! It had volume-leveling turned on!
