Does anyone do this and if so, how?
Isn't that physically impossible - unless you go back to the Quad days?
Surround is either 5 or 6 speakers. Quad is only 4.

Well, there's always Quadraphonic;-)
There are many HT amps with on-board phono capability, so if you use an MM-cartridge, the signal can then be reprocessed for some semblance of surround. There's also a the following link, which looks interesting but which I have never heard. I believe it can be configured for up to 5.1 channels.

See the other recent thread on Quad vinyl.
The simplest form of surround is the "Dynaquad" idea, and works with any stereo medium: Just put two additional speakers behind you, wire them in series and connect across the hot left and hot right terminals on your amp. No ground connection.
Play your SQ, QH, Dynaquad etc. LPs that way to get some semblence of the surround mix. Also works with Dolby Surround CDs or DVDs. It's crude, but you might be surprised...
Caveat, a very few oddball amplifiers will not like this arrangement. Very few.

There are actually surround minisystems with 2 main speakers and 2 surround speakers and I use one of them. The Bass boost feature on it provides the internal subwoofer in the minisystem.

You can do this without quad vinyl. I'm taking about regular vinyl. What you have to do is feed the stereo into a matrix surround processor to decode rear channel information from the stereo signal. They can be analog processors like Circle Surround (RSP) or 6-axis (Madrigal-Citation). Audio Research used to make a high end type analog processor designed for two-channel sources but I don't think they make it anymore.
