Anybody remember a Fifties tonearm which used a cantilever mechanism forward of the post? I used to have a 16" Goldring Jubilee with this construction but I believe there was also an American arm so constructed. It worked very well and I wish I still had it.

I don't know the Goldring arm, but is it anything like the Pickering 190? It could pivot up and down near the headshell. I've never had one, but there was a presentation at ARSC a few years ago that talked about its advantages in tracking warped records.

I also remember seeing a school phono (one of the higher-end ones, as I recall) with a similar sort of tonearm.

Hello Russell. The Jubilee had a conventional arm tube, the cantilever mechanism being located near the pillar so I think it would not be similar to the Pickering from your description. The only reference to the 190 I googled out was on the ARSC site :

"99-15 The Pickering 190 Tonearm: Its Use in the Playback of Metal Parts and Warped Discs, by Dennis D. Rooney (Sony Classical)" ( http://arsc-audio.org/cds.html )

Love to see a photo of that rare bird :)

I have now found a photo of a Gray transcription arm in a magazine which does indeed indicate the use of the cantilever principle to apply tracking force. Can't see the model number though

Thanks for your response

Brian.

Lived in Upton Park for the first 30 years of my life so.... :)

BTW Just discovered the Goldring arm was actually called a TR.2. Found a picture in the 1960 Hi Fi Yearbook I've just bought

I know I know, it's just too depressing to talk about at the mo' - but we'll get something from Chelski and probably lose every other game.

I also post on KUMB and Hammers Connection

I hate to tell you this Tim - but I stopped following the game 30 years ago :sigh:

Still, I've got me memories if not the scarf anymore :)

Blimey, chaps. Me too.

What are the chances of 3 Irons being on this US based board?

I'm in Upminster.
