    Elvis 24 Karat Hits

After all the raves about the DCC "Elvis 24 Karat Hits", I made it my mission to find a copy of this "out of print" disc. I've been searching all over the internet for months, without success. Then, while checking out ebay a few weeks ago, I found TWO sealed copies of the disc up for grabs from two different sellers. I got beat out on the first one, but I hung in there and won the auction for the second one. It arrived yesterday. It broke my heart to un-seal the disc, but I had to know what it sounded like. All the searching and waiting was worth it. Wow! Steve's comment that the "magic is in the midrange" was never more true than with this material. Talk about "breath of life", I'm not sure whether it feels more like Elvis is in the room with me, or I'm in the studio with him, but either way, the result is the same. I have yet to A/B this with any of my existing Elvis discs, including the new "30 #1 Hits", but regardless, this is pretty damn good! If an opportunity to acquire this disc presents itself to you, don't pass it up. You won't be sorry! Steve, excellent job!!:righton:

The presence of Elvis being there in the room, or you being in the control booth is the first thing that struck me!

To think that ALL it took was a bit of UN-EQ'ing on Steve's part...

What amazes me most is how much better it is than the new remixed versions.

Grant, I know you mean well, but the three months I spent mastering the Elvis had to do with much more than just un-eq'ing!

By the way all, I can reveal now that I remixed "Return To Sender", and "(You're The) Devil In Disguise" (plus a few more) from the three-track session tapes.

Just wanted to set the record straight at last!

Best damn Elvis CD I own. It's honestly such a great sounding CD. I really wish the box sets were done like this. :(

Ahhhh, remixes that you like!!!! :) Now that the at-cay is outta the ag-bay, did Bill Porter have any comments about your remixing???

    Steve,

Now, at last, I understand why those tracks, in particular, sound so damn good. I have often marveled at power of the vocals on "Return To Sender" on 24K Hits!

    Thanks for sharing this revelation!

    Bob:)

    Elvis remixes.

The two main ones I did, I did for a reason, since I HATE remixes (usually), as it involves playing God and tampering with musical history.

    "(You're The) Devil In Disguise".

Elvis' RCA Nashville recording engineer Bill Porter told me that although he mixed that song live to three-track and two-track (at the same time), RCA rejected his two-track mix for some reason and remixed it a year later in New York for the Elvis' Golden Records album (was it Volume 3 or 4?) in 1964. Bill hated the RCA stereo mix. So, this is a song that I took pleasure in "restoring" to the Bill Porter version. Great song, and great music track. I must have listened to just the music on that song about 50 times. Amazing track. And then of course, I listened to just Elvis' vocal track for a while. What breath control! Awesome!

    "Return To Sender"

This is a song that was recorded and mixed at Radio Recorders for the "Girls, Girls, Girls" soundtrack. The two-track master sounded great, but I felt there was just too much damn compression on the song, one of my all-time favorites.

My remix is faithful to the original mix in every way (echo, tonality, etc.) EXCEPT I backed off on the compressor about 1/2.

    Glad ya like 'em!

I found a copy on eBay a few days ago with a reasonable buy-it-now, and snapped it up immediately. It arrived today. I'm finishing my first listen-through, and am marveling at the tonality. These tracks all sound SO good.

"Little Sister" is one of my favs, too. I hadn't heard "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" in a long time, and was delighted when it came on. Amazing work as always, Steve!

And... that is why, I had Steve sign my copy (#48), after the first time I heard it, at the Stereophile Show in '98. It is Still that Good!

Steve's CD is outstanding. I also like the SACD, but I have only done a limited comparison. If pressed, I have to stick with Steve's CD. The vocals on the CD are eerily good. :)

The DCC vinyl of 24 Karat Hits is equally as great as the gold CD version. I remember buying the "Elvis Is Back!" DCC gold CD and the 24 Karat vinyl on the same day from Tower Records in New Orleans. It must have been 1996 or so... I wanted to get both versions of both titles that day, but could only afford two of them. That big beautiful cover of 24 Karat vinyl won me over!

The good old days - browsing through and buying DCC product at Tower Records.
