Can anyone recommend a good quality, cheap compact LP storage solution, perhaps stackable. Right now I have most of my collection in these huge unsightly record bins that I bought from a record store going-out-of-business sale back in the '70's. They take up way too much room and my wife is giving me a hard time about it. "Why don't you sell them? You can make some good money." That's not gonna happen, so maybe she'll be happy if they don't take up as much space.

You can get a decent bookshelf or even a set of crates that should do well.
I simply went to my local mill store and bought several "cubicle" shevles. I stained them, stacked them in two ways (the cubes are square, 13"wide and long) and it looks great! Very inexpensive, and complimentary to a very nice vinyl collection.

So they already come put together as cubes? (Don't mind me - I'm not the type that gets out to the lumberyard very often). That's sounds pretty good and it sounds better than the milk crate type.
I stored mine in the basement furnace room. Last winter was pretty cold, so in the spring, I mopped up the left over vinyl.
Kidding! :D
My records ARE in the basement rec room, nice and dry. My philosophy: Out of sight, out of mind. I've not been hassled about them yet!
You can actually build your own racks with wood but Sckott's prebuilt idea is much more convenient! And the cost is probably about the same....

Mine are still in plastic milk crates hidden up in a bedroom closet. It is fun to go thru them occasionally.

I put mine in boxes from Bags Unlimited. The're easy to fold into shape when you get 'em, they don't require any tape or glue, and they've got lids. Each box stores 50-65 LPs and can withstand 275 lbs. Prices are as follows:
2 boxes....................$13.60
5 boxes....................$27.80
10 boxes..................$43.00
25 boxes..................$87.75
50 boxes..................$161.70
100 boxes................231.00 + freight
They've got boxes for 45s and CDs, too. Here's the website:

Old wooden fruit crates hold my lp's - they usually aren't too expensive when you find them, and they have built in handles for luggability...

Hi:
I found nice stackable cubes from a catalogue called Reliable Home Office. They come in black, white and "honey" (i.e., sort of like light oak.) You need to put them together, but it is easy to do, and once done, they look great. And, they do stack well because they come with brass pins to lock the units in place, vertically (i.e. one on top of the other.) Horizontally, they don't lock. But, they stack together nicely anyway. I live in San Francisco and even with the few minor quakes we've had here since I've had these, it hasn't been a problem. The problem is that Reliable Home Office has stopped (as of the last time I called them) carrying these items. And, they won't tell you the manufacturer. This wouldn't be a problem if I hadn't lost the packing slip!!!!! So, I plan on trying furnitureonline.com. Cost is $25.00 each and they measure 15" x 15" x 15" so even box sets fit. I initially ordered 30 of them and my price including shipping was $748.00, a steal IMO, compared to the outrageous prices carpenters quote for custom work.

Just be very careful with where you put that stuff, because presurized board warps very easy in moist climates, especially some basements!

Thanks Sckott. My apt. is on the 6th floor, with lots of light (with shades drawn tight so the light won't hit the LP's) and it's been 2 years and no warping, so I think I am OK. But, I appreciate input!

The problem with cardboard boxes is that you won't be able to browse the records when the boxes are stacked. I think stackable wooden crates or shelves are the way to go.

Good point, which is why I don't stack mine. My rationale for the boxes is storage for valuable LPs. If you don't have to stack 'em, they're the best preservation-minded storage available when the lids and protective sleeves are used.
