View Full Version : country music on S&P/other country music Steve will master

I know S&P will be issuing some country music, butwhen it comes to country music, will they mainly be reissuing out of print classic albums, will they sign new artists who sing more of the classic styles of country music but a contemporary band and/or sign bands and artists that sing "new country" music? A lot of our group would rather hear the "classic" styles of country music over "new country" even though, as you know I do listen to all kinds of country music, past and present but in business as you know, you have to cater to many markets. When it comes to country music, the fans will be able to vote on whatever styles S&P and DCC should issue the most of. Voting on more than one style is encouraged.

Just as long as it comes from Columbia, RCA-Victor, Liberty, UA or Capitol, we are in good shape.
S&P Compact Classics has already released one Johnny Cash Two-Fer. Our SECOND Cash release (Ragged Old Flag & Patriot) was nixed by Sony, well after production began. Sony wanted to do it themselves and pulled our release. I guess it tied in so well will September 11th, they kicked themselves for not thinking of it first. That's show biz, I guess.

I hate that new hot country **** and Urban Cowboy manure.
Hey Bradley what album(s) would you suggest??

Howzabout some Buck Owens hits sets? I have one of those cheesy Rhino GH discs and I'd like something more comprehensive. Buck-Buck-Bo-Buck controls his stuff, so maybe he'd allow for an audiophile version of his catalog goodies to be issued ala Steve...
I just voted for country/rock, which I love. Who sang "I'm in love with Linda Ronstadt"? Should have been me! :)
I'd like to see the Winters Brothers Band (NOT Johnny or Edgar Winter but the Winters Brothers Band!), Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros., Charlie Daniels, Rossington Collins (altough there is a British remaster out there), Outlaws and maybe Wet Willie, Grinderswitch, Allen Collins and the like. My favorite music era!
Some may say that some of this is more rock than country - but so be it!
I hope you check out the marketing possibilities before you do any of these first, Steve! Don't think you'd get too many sales for the Winters Brothers band!
I know there's already a handful of George Jones compilations out there that cover this period (the Rhino disc, the two CD Cup of Loneliness which covers the Mercury years, and disc one of the Sony compilation), but it would be cool to do a truly definitive two CD set. I always felt shortchanged by the Rhino disc (only 18 songs), and some classics like "Things Have Gone To Pieces" and "Take Me" are hard to find in their original versions, much less in great sound.
The Merle Haggard Anthology compiled by Jimmy Guterman and mastered by Steve would be a good model to follow.

Steve, did you remaster that CD? I hope so, since I just ordered it from Amazon! :)
And, have there been any other sneaky S&P releases that we should be looking for? I mean, things that you remastered?

Being from the land Down Under,Rajon is a sometimes dodgy company who
basically assemble compilations for major record companies. The Jones one is
a good one. Though, reflecting on their dodgy side they reproduced down to
the tracks the Bear Family cd "My Rifle My Pony & Me" down to duplicating
the movie posters contained in the Bear Family booklet, but where the
originals were in German (in Bear Family booklet) they had surprisingly
changed to English in Rajon's comp. Mostly they deal in K tel type
stuff..you know the deal..small print indiacting these may be re-recorded
versions etc.
George is a surprise though.
If anyone wants one it will cost them just over $10 US including airmail
post. Contact me off list if ytou want one.

Thanks for the post! It's nice to see a good compilation of his Musicor material. It's such a huge mess of material: so many recordings, so many misfires, but a nice bunch of classics in there as well...
I may just burn my own career retrospective when I pick up the disc, but I'm would still love to see DCC or S&P make one themselves. It may be a licensing hassle, but I'm sure the country-loving music press out there would be absolutely ecstatic over one.

The Best of Red Simpson CD on Razor & Tie is a great CD for all truck drivers country/honky tonk/Bakersfield era sound fans and there is an import twofer of his Man Behind The Badge & Roll Truck Roll albums but more Red Simpson should be released.
Rhino has a Buck Owens boxed set and Sundazed reissued many of his albums.
The most comprehensive Red Sovine comp is TeeVee's "Best of Red Sovine: 20 Greatest Hits" comp.
A Moon Mullican comp is definitely worth having for rockabilly and honky tonk fans.
If you don't have "Wanted! The Outlaws" get it today.
The "Essential" RCA series of hits comps are worth having and/or the RCA Country Legends comps.

For all those country fans out there, read this,I got this from a hillbilly board, for anyone who likes serious country music,Westside Records in the U.K have been a blessing in releasing King label artists but it looks like it's all about to change.
Q1:Howdy folks,
Can anyone let me know the details for the Cowboy
Copas disc on Westside. Also, I know this was asked a
few months back, just thought I'd ask again - does
anyone know when the second volume to 'Shuffle Town'
will be released? Any other new releases of note on
Westside?
Thanks in advance
A1:Here is the track-listing for Copasetic (Westside CD WESF115):
Alabam
Filipino Baby
I Don't Blame You
There Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me
Tragic Romance
Sweet Thing
Sundown And Sorrow
Juke Box Blues
No More Roamin'
Signed, Sealed And Delivered
Don't Let Them Change Your Mind (unissued undubbed version)
It's A Lonely World (unissued undubbed version)
Below The Mason-Dixon Line
Breeze
Night Plane To Memphis
Double Trouble On My Mind
If I Bring Home The Bacon
Tennessee Waltz
Hangman's Boogie
Don't Let The Deal Go Down
Tennessee Flat Guitar
I Can't Stop Loving You
Feelin' Low
Look What I Got
Lock Me In Your Heart
Hangman's Boogie (unissued alt take)
Latest releases (late 2001) include Hank Penny (Westside) and Red Foley
(Edsel) and they are still hopeful that the second Moon Mullican will be
released, but it seems unlikely (sob!) that the second volume of "Shuffle
Town" will ever now see the light of day. There have been big changes at
Demon/Westside and the sales of these ol' hillbilly things have not been
what they had hoped...too many "fans" making do with CD-R copies instead of
shelling out for the real thing, perhaps?
Dave
Q2:Dave
- can you give me any more details on the Hank Penny
and Red Foley discs, as I was unaware of the release
of either of these discs
A2:The Red Foley is "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy" (Edsel EDCD 638) and contains
the original 1944-1958 Decca cuts of Sugarfoot Rag/Smoke On The
Water/Tennessee Border/Tennessee Saturday Night/When God Dips His Love In My
Heart/Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy/Playin' Dominoes and Shootin'
Dice/Midnight/Old Kentucky Fox Chase/Pin Ball Boogie/Skinny Minnie
(Fishtail)/Peace In The Valley/My Window Faces The South/The Love Bug
Itch/Hot Toddy/Milk Bucket Boogie/New Jolie Blon (New Pretty Blonde)/Old
Shep/Plantation Boogie/A Satisfied Mind/Birmingham Bounce/Hearts Of
Stone/Hot Rod Race/Rockin' And A-Reelin'/Crazy Little Guitar Man.
I see nobody else came forward, so here is the tracklisting for "Hillbilly
Be-Bop: The King Anthology 1944-1950":
Last Night (King 507)/Two Timin' Mama (1122)/Merle's Buck Dance (521)/(Won't
You Ride In) My Little Red Wagon (639)/Guess Who Took Your Place (941)/My
Life Is No Bed Of Roses (unissued 1946)/The Freckle Song (606)/Locked Out
(606)/Someone Moved The Ladder (alt take)/Someone Moved The Ladder
(748)/Kentucky (698)/Politics (711)/Bloodshot Eyes (828)/I Was Satisfied
(828)/Hillbilly Be-Bop (alt take)/Hillbilly Be-Bop (795)/Wham! Bam! Thank
You, Ma'am (869)/The Solitary Blues (924)/Jersey Bounce (869)/Jersey Bounce
(alt take)/Shivers (unnissued 1950)/Tell Me All About Georgia (924)/Tuxedo
Junction (1020)/You're So Different (957)/What've You Got (957)/Remington
Ride (902)/Alabama Jubilee (alt take)/Alabama Jubilee (1020)
Another durn near essential one, mate!
Regards
Dave Penny
Sadly no relation:-)
Q3:NOw if Westdise would get their act together and issue a Wayne Raney
set!!!!.......or one by The Carlisles
Ed
A3:Both of these compilations were projected at Westside while Tony Rounce was
there (along with Fairley Holden, young Grandpa Jones, Homer & Jethro, The
Shelton Brothers, early George Jones, Charlie Ryan, The Delmore Brothers,
etc.), but as I wrote earlier, sales have been disappointing for The Demon
Music Group and it is unlikely that any of these projects will now see the
light of day; if they can't shift Moon Mullican and Cowboy Copas - even to
the hillbilly fan base - what hope is there for selling Fairley Holden?
Dave
There it is !!!

I'm primarily only interested in great country guitarists. I know Steve digs the same kind of stuff I do, so here are some suggestions.
Albert Lee -- a lot of his stuff is OOP, or only available as imports. "Speechless" and "Gagged but not Bound" should *definitely* be in print and available. (I believe the former is import-only and the latter is OOP.) AFAIK, titles like his s/t album and "Hiding" are OOP period. This guy is phenomenal.
Jerry Reed -- his catalog needs a smokin' instrumental guitar God anthology (The Claw) without all the novelty crap (She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft). PLEASE, Steve, would you consider this?
Chet Atkins -- whatever you can get your hands on. The Buddha anthology I have varies considerably in sound quality, so I'd be curious what kind of sources you could come up with.
Speedy and Jimmy -- these guys are pretty well covered, I suppose, between the Bear family stuff and the two R&T CDs.
Joe Maphis -- May not be possible, with Sony finally releasing "Fire on the Strings" (get it!). But worth considering.
Roy Clark -- I don't know how much instrumental guitar hero type stuff exists. "The Lightning Fingers of" is amazing, though. Same rules apply as Jerry Reed! No novelty tunes!
Merle Travis -- Again, the "Jerry Reed" rule applies.
Doc Watson, Les Paul, Glen Campbell -- other names to consider.
Lastly, should it not be feasible to issue original albums, I would be keen on a wicked country guitar compilation CD or multi-CD with names culled from the list above.

Those are some great ones Patrick. I'll add 1 more to that list:
Hank Garland - Sundazed did a great 2 CD comp. of his recordings from Columbia. I believe ther's 3 more albums (including a live one) that are still out of print.
Best - ED

A great idea for a Jerry Reed instrumental set,I have wanted one for eons.Roy Clark did another album for Capitol that has an instrumental of Alabama Jubilee,it's on one of the R&T discs.
Glen Campbell disc would be good too,if a broad ranging country guitar set ever got off this message board,it "must" include Thumbs Carlisle's "Springfield Guitar Social", a 2:30 run thru'major country and jazz pickers of the day,TC mimics (in order)
Grady Martin,Jimmy Bryant,Les Paul,George Barnes,Chet,Hank Garland,Speedy West, twin guitars(ala Grady and Jabbo Arrington when they were in Little Jimmy Dickens band),Billy Byrd and finally 2 solos Thumbs style where smokes everything came before it,a bona-fide classic guitar that has never been released on CD as far as I know,I only have a ****** lo-fi download,it's superb.I used to have 2 live tracks I downloaded that had TC and Buddy Emmons together, they were great !!!

The Sundazed Buck CDs sound quite excellent to me (at least the four I've heard). Most of them are done by Bob Irwin. The Rhino Buck box is about as comprehensive as you could want. It is a Bill Inglot job so it's bright, but in the case of Buck it actually works okay. Buck wanted his stuff to be extra-trebly.

Bear Family released a CD of his early 50's stuff.
This is from the web page:
The 1961 road accident that left Hank Garland unable to play cut short one of the most promising careers in country music. In 1949, Hank played on Red Foley´s Sugarfoot Rag, and suddenly the world took notice of this incredible 18 year-old guitar prodigy. He was signed to Decca, and this set comprises his Decca sides from 1949 to 1951 and his 1957 Chic session. 20 titles including Third Man Theme, Sugarfoot Boogie, Hillbilly Express, Rag.
Sugarfoot Rag ~ The Third Man Theme ~ Flying Eagle Polka ~ Sugarfoot Boogie ~ Hillbilly Express ~ Seventh And Union ~ Lowdown Billy ~ Sentimental Journey ~ Doll Dance ~ Baby Guitar ~ Hank´s Dream ~ FOLEY, Red: Sugarfoot Rag ~ E-String Rag ~ Guitar Shuffle ~ I´m Moving On ~ This Cold War With You ~ I´ll Never Slip Around Again ~ Some Other World ~ It Is No Secret ~ I´m Crying (& DOTTIE DILLARD & JACK SHOOK) ~
Yes there is a 5 CD box set at HG's website but it's $90
http://www.hankgarland.com/CD_Collection/cd_collection.html
that has a live disc.Seems there is quite a lot of these 50's jams that were recorded at the Carousel Club and broadcast.

So would I. The comp would have to include his Decca and Starday material. The TeeVee comp is great for the Starday material but there is room for improvement in sound quality on that set, and the lack of liner notes would definitely be made up in a new Sovine comp.

Hey Steve,
Here's a group no one will touch! The Rowans- The Rowan Brothers. They put out I believe 3 or more LPs in the 70's. s Seems brother Peter was the only one who had any success. Really enjoyed those LPs.

Hey, I saw Peter Rowan four years ago yesterday. He was playing with Tony Rice and Tim O'Brien.
How about Michael Nesmith and the First National Band? Country from an ex Monkee! It's been many many years since I've played an LP though. Not sure how "country" it would be to you 'true' Country fans, though.
