Just came back from North American Sound. These guys sell Carey, Sonic Frontiers, McIntosh and other well respected brands.

They claim that they were just informed that DVD will will be changing specs. You won't be able to play the old DVDs on the new machines. Time to buy your DVD collection over again!

Eh!?!

What gives? Is there anything to this? Has anyone heard anything about this?

This is nuts, man.... they must be crazy!

That would make no sense at all.

DVD is actually written like an ISO9660 format. What's nice is many different platforms can accept DVD including PC-DVD Rom, and some higher end gaming stations. The whole idea was that the DVD invent was made underneath the term "Digital Versital Disc". Today, it is just that.

What you can PUT on a DVD is limitless only to the normal < 9gig limit. You could put SUPER-Hi-Definition video on one, and keep a normal video signal on the rest. In fact, you realize that one could make double-sided discs too. There's no excuse to ailenate and 'inferiorate' the current layout or content of the disc. Just like there's DD 5.1 on most every DVD-A, you can take a DVD and put anything on it you could think of. A DVD is just a bag. You can put whatever you want in it, just like ISO9660 practically. They made players read very simple layout instructions, and it's as versitile as you could imagine.

MPEG-2 also may have its frame-per-sec limitations, but depth and size of screen can be 16:9 for HI DEF. Hey, that's the NORM these days.

I really don't think I'm missing anything, and sorry to sound closed-minded, but knocking the format down for a "late" idea seems silly. You can do so many things with DVD, and I don't think there's a big reason to change it now. Big shot to the foot.

Thanks, Sckott. That makes a little (OK, a LOT) more sense to me. If this proves to be false since I got this from an audiophile store, not a minimum wage or commission sales person, I'll have to conclude that I live in a city full of whack-nuts! ;)

Well it's supposed to happen in the Spring. A long way to go....

Another big kicker is a lot of DVD-A titles are coming out, and even a longer list that has many titles solidified. I can't imagine what Blockbuster would do with all of those discs, especially when their deep corporate entity has 75-80% of all entertainment made today, with Hollywood power as well. I just don't think this kind of rumour is justified, but regardless, thanks for sharing yer experiences! :)

It's still spinning in my head how illogical that rumour sounds.
