This essay on LP cutting by Steve's long time buddy Kevin Gray is an amazing wealth of information about vinyl and digital.
Once you read this, I think you will understand a bit more about what Steve does and why he does it. I sure did!

Yes, thanks Kim!
I remember originally reading Kevin's essay in some trade magazine, Audio Replication News or something like that.
What is interesting is that cutting a record clearly involves RULES AND REGULATIONS. One cannot stray far from them like with CD mastering. Having these rules is a good thing I think. It means that every mastering engineer good and bad has to get with the program somewhat in order to make an acceptable record. When the gloves are taken off (as in CD mastering), the really bad stuff starts to happen.
It's amazing that a medium that came around in the late 1940's is still the best one to play back music on. Keeps us humble, hmmm?
Reading this article just shows why Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman are still hanging out and working together after 19 years!

Hi,
Nice post! Thanks Kim :)
I really like Angel's point of how it is amazing that w/ all the technological advances, vinyl stills rules. I'm also amazed that w/ the rapid advances of technology all around us we can still get better sound from vinyl & stereo equipment made in the 50's and 60's. Amazed or not, out w/ the new & in w/ the old.
The Music Never Stops,
Jeffrey
