View Full Version : Can I Turn Off My Marantz 8 With My Marantz 7?

I am trying to simplify my life by plugging my Marantz 8B's power cord into one of the switched outlets on my Marantz 7C preamp. Will this mess up the sound or put too much strain on the 7C's power switch?

If switching the 8B on and off using the 7C's switched power outlets isn't a good idea, can I plug both of them into a power strip and turn them on-and-off that way?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why would you want to turn them off unless you're going on a weeks vacation? SS needs to warm up too. Unless your pre-amp has a dedicated power amp outlet I don't recommend this.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for responding, but I don't understand your answer. The 7C and 8B are tube preamps/amps and, as I understand it, consume tremendous amounts of electricity when powered on (at least the 8B amp does). Also, I understand that leaving the 8B on shortens tube life.

It's not only a great idea, the switched plug is there for that reason. The amp was designed to be turned on and off from the 7, that is why it has no "on/off" of its own. They work as a team. A great sounding team I might add.

Feinstein,If you could ship this equipment to me for an evaluation,I could give you my opinion. ;)

Mr. H.

Thanks for the OK to do this. I just didn't want to put undue strain on the 7C's power switch since the 8B draws a lot of current.

Thanks again. It's a lot easier than plugging and unplugging the 8B every time!

BTW: I have the 8B hooked up in non-triode (pentode) mode and prefer the sound in every way to my Marantz 9's.

Ha! Me too.

I think we are the only two who do. No, Kevin Hayes of VAC does as well..

Really? Kevin Hayes likes the Marantz 8B better than the 9?

BTW: Do you still have an 8 (or 8B)? I remember that you were selling one a while back....

Kevin Hayes LOVES the 8B. He sez that next to it, the Marantz 9 sounds solid state....

Yes, I still have my 8B/7C/10B trio. I sold my second set...

They will bury this stuff with me!

I have a 10B that is sitting in my closet right now. Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing to listen to on FM in Detroit.

The classical station went off the air a few years ago. There are no college stations to speak of. NPR here is a talk station and CBC-FM from neighboring Ontario has awful audio.

I listen strictly to AM nowadays.

Give that 10B a workout for at least an hour a month. Doesn't matter if it's hooked up to anything....

I didn't realize it was important to crank up electronics if they aren't used on a regular basis. I did know the caps degrade over time. What does the hour a month of warmup prevent?

It prevents the caps from degrading!

At LEAST one hour a month.

Use it or lose it!

WARNING:

Amps must be hooked up to speakers when switched on to "exercise"!

Wow, the Model 8 must sound real GOOD, because my Model 9s shamed all of the solid state stuff I auditioned it against in the store before I bought it. I guess I will have to start saving my nickels and dimes....;)
