I think your safe Steve. Besides, look at the bright side, it could be worse, people could be comparing you to Alan Douglas ! Imagine that ! Steve Hoffman secretly erases Ginger Baker's drum tracks from Fresh Cream and has them re-recorded by Rikki Rockett for a more modern sound because that's what the public wants ! Right ? No wonder that CD sounds so damn good ! LOL

Steve, just don't stand near any exploding drums! That's what Pete Townsend blames his hearing loss on, when they had a little explosion on the Smothers Brothers set.

i read years ago that he also blamed, not onstage volume, but playing guitars through headphones loudly.

Good memory! I remember that he was being heavily criticized for being a wimp about hearing loss. I believe this was after the after the second Who farewell tour. He responded something like "...all I'm saying is don't do what I did....open a bottle and play all night at loud volumes through your headphones". Or something to that effect.

Just an observation, but Pete seems to keep changing the reason for his hearing loss. On a VH-1 special on the greatest TV moments of Rock & Roll (I believe that was the theme) they showed the Smothers Brothers clip with The Who.
Pete said that the explosion wasn't what caused the hearing loss but one of Roger's screams on stage that he said went right through him and dropped him to the floor.
All of the above may be correct. Who knows?

Maybe he just doesn't want to admit that he has been careless with his hearing. But then, many haven't. It could be indicative of not accepting responsibility for his actions.

personally, whenever i played drums in a band i always wore hearing protection.
having a ride cymbal inches from the side of your head sorta demands it.
lately, i'm glad to see the issue re: use of hearing protection is more high profile among musicians.

there's a lovely letter from pete townsend to the editors of TAPE OP in the current issue:
"the who's long-time sound man (and studio confidant) bobby pridden passed me two editions of your magazine. i have #23 in front of me. just wanted you to know--from someone who had a complete home demo studio in early 1964--you have a publication i would describe as "necessary"."
screenwriter william goldman would describe this statement as "high cotton".
