Hey, group...I'm just staring at these outrageous eBay auctions for the bootleg Beatle "MFSL" CD's and wondering....

These are "rips" to CD, obviously recorded from the vinyl source, the MFSL LP's. I'm staring at my new daul-deck CD recorder (Hannukah came a bit early!) and wondering why I can't make my own...any suggestions or feedback?

Best to the Board!

Ben,

Of course you can make your own. I would suggest going directly from your phonostage to the CD recorder (to keep the signal as direct as possible). If you want to go a little further and have a decent parametric EQ then perhaps play around a little in the 10k range (some/not all of the MFSL Beatles vinyl were given a baptism of eq). Let us know the results...

I've done this with my MFSL Hard Day's, For Sale, White Album and Abbey Road LPs (and many other vinyl treasures), with exactly this method. The results are quite good. It's nice to be able to play them in the car.

I say try it ... if your vinyl's in good shape and you have a good phono cart/preamp and a decent D/A converter, you ought to get great results.

Just a note - the title track to PPM has inherint distortion. Not sure if you'd know that, but don't blame your equipment for that.

BTW, the FSL's are really MFSL rips. The FSLs are all over the place, easilly obtained.

That's why all the MFSL (& the mono too) cdr rips are so frustrating. They are all essentially DIY. A lot of variables - condition of the vinyl, the quality of the equipment (TT/cart, phono preamp, A/D convertor, software). If you've got the vinyl and are happy with your setup, your cdrs would be just as good as anybody elses.

Ben,
If your rips turn out to your satisfaction I would be interested in buying/trading all 13 albums.
Send me an email. Thanks :)

Dave:

I currently only own MFSL Abbey Road & White Album. Plan on purchasing the entire MFSL LP boxed set sometime in the next month...will keep you posted!

Meantime, I'm gonna rip the Abbey Road to
CD-R this weekend...I'll send you a copy...

Thanks to the board for all your responses!

Have a good weekend,
