Looking for recommendations for a turntable and cartridge at the $1,000 or less retail price for the combined. Any combinations are welcome. If you could also give me a general idea of the sound quality from the items you recommend that would also be appreciated. Thank you all.

A Rega P3-2000 with a Dynavector 10x4 Mk II cartridge would do the trick for about a grand. Also some people like the Music Hall MMF7 which includes a cartridge.

I have heard second hand about QC issues with the Music Hall though.

I would keep an eye on audiogon.com for a new or nearly new Rega P25 with a cart....picked up mine, about a month old, for $850...

The Music Hall's are nice...owned the MMF-5 for about a year...fell victim to the upgrade virus, though...

Good luck!

I suggest you look at the VPI turntables. Even their "starter" unit can be upgraded easily. I love my VPI TNT-III.

The VPI units are available from a few of the on-line stores, so you don't have to worry about the (possibly horrible) experience in a "high end" audio salon.

The VPI HW-19Jr. is available from about $650, so with an arm an cartridge you should probably be able to get a great sounding set up at your price.
