Hi,
Rhino hasn't gotten the best reviews on the old board, and Joe Gastwirt has been rather ignored. So this weekend, I broke out the new Grateful Dead box set compliments of Rhino & mastered by Joe Gastwirt. First a disclaimer, my CDP is a Planet 2000 wo/ a HDCD chip. This is an HDCD box.
Listened to the old Workingman's Dead release and thought it sounded good. Why remaster? Put on the remaster and got the answer: wider dynamic range, hotter levels wo/ distortion, better vocal soundstaging which jelled the lead & background vocals (problem w/ original cd), better clarity. WOW!
Listened to old American Beauty release and thought it also sounded good. The remaster was better. Not as extreme as Workingman's probably b/c there wasn't as much need.
My opinion, buy it today! Maybe part of the reason that Rhino hasn't always done the best work is that other groups have let them get away w/ shabby work.
Let It Rock,
Jeffrey
