View Full Version : Component Rack Spikes vs New Hardwood Floor!

Got a problem. Just moved and will shortly commence setting up my system on a brand new hardwood parquet floor. The components will sit on a rather heavy Target stand that has some substantial and very sharply pointed spikes on each foot. Now I know the ideal is to let the spikes penetrate carpeting or whatever then drive into the surface below or at least provide an extremely small area of contact to help eliminate the transmission of unwanted resonances and vibrations. In my case this would mean an approximate sum total weight of the amplifier - 50 lb, preamp - 25 lb DVD player - 10 lb SACD player - 60 lb and the rack weight itself or a couple of hundred lbs driving these points into the floor. Not to be, I need an alternative. One suggestion I got from Tangent is to take those sticky round felt protectors that are used on furniture legs, stick a large coin like our Canadian dollar (loonie) to the sticky side then with the felt side down, put one under each rack spike. The distribution of the weight by the coin and the fact that the felt is the contact surface would mean very little damage if any, to the floor.
The above, although not the ideal, seems like an easy practical solution.
Anyone have other options that might fit this situation?

You could always try something like replacing the spikes with Nordost Pulsar Points - they come in a variety of thread sizes so you should be able to get one that is a direct drop in for the Target.

I'm not familiar with them Aashton, what are they?
I too have my equipment rack on hardwood foors and have put pennies under the spikes. I was using the felt pads, but the spikes penetrated the felt. There are more expensive solutions, but the pennies blend in better with the color of the floor and I'm only out $ .04. Can't beat that!

Hi Khorn
I've included a picture - they come with a threaded length that screws into your stand and also the little dished piece. The larger cone section is shaped such that the two pieces have a very small contact area - but also so that there is a captured join to stop movement (not a very good description - sorry :o )

My solution was to use Lovan brass footers. They worked perfectly on Legacy speakers as well as Lovan equipment racks and speaker stands. You can buy them on-line in packs of 6, maybe 8.
Yes, Aashton has a great idea! You can also buy spikes with their own "stand" or base. The pointy end of the spike inserts itself into the base.
Loonies would proably be cheaper, though. Try denting the middle ever so slightly to provide a solid middle for the point.
Avoid the twoonies, though! They may still fall apart....
