There are tons of converters that do this.
I've used WinAVI VideoConverter.

A good resource for video questions is videohelp.com.

Hi Michael,

First you encode this avi to meg2. And after that the file has to be authored so it can be burned to dvd-r.

There is that extra step of authoring that makes it different than cd-r recording.

Feel free to pm me if you need some help or directions to legit freeware out there.

lots of settings there Michael. There are a few really good guides, look under guides on that site for them.

Between Hoffman and Videohelp, I would rate these the top of internet hill. Very useful and informative.

It's not free, but I think they offer a free trial. I use it to convert AVIs and other stuff I find on the 'net to VCD so I can watch it on a regular TV. Works pretty well. But there are tons of tools that do the same thing. I've also used TMPGEnc and it's a bit confusing but works great if you follow the many guides at videohelp. Have fun!

A friend of mine does a LOT of this. He's tried all the freeware, all the shareware, and all the commercial products. He says nothing beats Adobe Premiere for ease of use and output quality.

The FREE trail...works great, but they put a WATERMARK right in the middle of the picture! Unwatchable!...unless you pay the $29.99. Oh well...I was hoping for a FREE one.:(

This I have found to be untrue.

While Adobe are the kings of graphics editing on Mac and PC, Adobe Premiere has been out classed by several other digital "video" editing software programs.

As a matter of fact, Premiere had become so unstable (means it crashes easily), that Adobe reworked it from scratch and came out with Premiere Pro, a newer version. But it does not have the stability of other programs. Quality should be equal (no better) to Final Cut Pro, Vegas 5, and Avid Express. As far as ease of use, no way, Adobe (like photoshop) is known to be very time intensive to master, and in the video world, folks want thing to happen in real time, not sit there trying various pull down menus and entering values.

So while you could do worse than Premiere Pro, there are some more stable programs that are eaiser to use. But the time it takes to get good on any of these programs makes many people reluctant to switch over from one to another once they have learned one well.

I ditched Premiere Pro for Sony Vegas 5 and never looked back. Its a newer, faster, fresher, friendlier design. I expect picture quality to be same in all these top of the line editing softwares.

I do this for a living.
