'The Daily Show With John Stewart' has got to be the funniest and the smartest show on television.

Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, there is no denying the greatness of this show. I loved the detailed writing combined with John's delivery--one of the best shows on television.

A lot of people thought this show was doomed when Craig Kilborne left; now it's difficult to imagine anyone but Jon Stewart behind that desk.

If I didn't have cable, this would be the only thing I would miss.

Excellent show, the only program that I watch every night.

My favorite bits are always when they make fun of the media, from MSNBC's wood model recreation of Saddam Hussein's "spider hole" to children reading pundit transcripts to last night's display of Tim Russert asking Condoleeza Rice the same goddamn question 50 times. The comedy practically writes itself.

Stewart and Lewis Black's work is hilarious, and informative at the same time. Occasionally, I find some of the field reporters to be rather irritating, but not horribly so.
I'd also recommend Keith Olbermann's Countdown on MSNBC. Serious, intellegent news, but Keith also knows how to inject a bit of humor and satire when warranted. I can't believe that horrible Nancy Grace show on CNN is beating him in the ratings.

I hang onto cable just so I can get my fix of "The Daily Show" - Jon Stewart and his crew are great, and Jon gets a special thumbs up for putting that pusillanimous Tucker Carlson in his place last year on the deservedly cancelled "Crossfire."
I like this show a lot also. Stewart, Black, and Colbert are hilarious. :D

This has slowly moved to the top of the heap, my favorite show (along with Frontline)... and I was one of those who thought they should've axed it when Kilborn left! Funny how things change. I never got into Kilborn's talk show (Conan all the way), and Jon Stewart has made the Daily Show into something far grander and -- ok I'll say it -- important.
I say Jon Stewart, but really the whole team. And when I say "the whole team", I really mean Stephen Colbert. Colbert is aces.

Sorry to have to go against the tide here, but The Daily Show is a show that I think I should like but that always leaves me a bit irritated when I watch it. I know that the writing is intelligent, but there's something about John Stewart's delivery that's just a little too smug for me to enjoy.

Even though I disagree with his views, I kinda like Tucker Carlson. That said, Crossfire stunk and deserved to get cancelled.
I love the Daily Show as well. Absolutely hilarious!

I find TDS more insightful at times than real news. Heck, even John Edwards announced his presidential campaign on the show. Who was the guy who did the movie reviews? He was hilarious and has been absent for a while. Jon Stewart is going on tour and I'll be catching him in May.
Tonight Al Green will be on the show. Nice!

My advice would be to start watching Bill Maher, if you can stand to. After a while Jon Stewart won't seem nearly so smug.

And I can handle smug if the smugness is coming from a commentator who maintains a sense of humor and some semblance of intellect, unlike a horse's *** windbag like Sean "Porky Boy" Hannity or Bill "Potty Mouth" O'Reilly.
Usually, when Jon Stewart's shtick starts to wear thin, he wisely throws the ball to Stephen Colbert (also hysterical on "Strangers With Candy") or Lewis Black or Samantha Bee. Also enjoy the guests he brings on the show, though the interview segment goes fast.

One of the smartest shows on TV now. It's a little scary how THIS show is becoming one of the biggest conduits of news to the current generation of viewers. I'm sure he must realize how influential he has become. Did anybody see last night's show with Tom Fenton? Fenton is a veteran reporter and his current book is lamenting the fact that the news business has gotten so severely dumbed down. It was really interesting to see Stewart's reactions to his points as he is (peripherally) part of that process. However, Stewart saves himself (and the show) by showing how BOTH sides of the political spectrum and the news services who report on them are all rapidly turning morally bankrupt. It's all been downhill since the Entertainment Divisions of all the major networks took over management of the News Divisions.

Me too. I haven't watched it too many times, but Stewart annoys me. I do find Stephen Colbert absolutely hilarious! When he does those little films when goes out and interviews people I'm rolling on the floor laughing. He is the man. The woman who does the bits is also very funny.

I don't think Jon's particularly smug (or maybe I'm so insufferably smug that it doesn't register!). He seems to me to be a very gracious host, even to guests who share a different perspective than he. And he does his homework, meaning he knows the particular guest's book or latest article or general POV, and helps elicit their opinions while gently jousting on those which he disagrees.
Unless, of course, the guest is either unwilling to talk or somehow glib and disrespectful themselves. I still recall from a few years back a major takedown of one of two Spice Girls being interviewed who seemed to be saying his silly little comedy show was beneath someone of her stature. His retorts were subtle enough that she seemed to miss most of them, but ferocious enough to leave the audience gasping and hawing. Oh man, I've longed to see that episode again...

Huge fan here as well, I think the weakest link would have to be Samantha Bee.....definitely the most hit or miss "reporter" on the show.

We could just be seeing him differently or, perhaps, defining the word "smug" differently. I never noticed him treating guests rudely or seeming ignorant about the people he is interviewing, so that is definitely not what I meant to convey when I said he was smug. What I meant, in descriptive terms, is that he comes across as the kind of guy who repeatedly wants to let you know how clever he thinks he is. In other words, there is a certain conceit that I perceive in his persona that just turns me off.

I'd give Rob Cordry that distinction, he can be very irritating at times. Ed Helms has some good moments, as does Samantha Bee. On the whole, I think the field reports are really the weak link of the show.
Thank heavens Mo Rocca took his smarmy know it all act elsewhere. You want to talk smug, THAT was the guy.
