View Full Version : The Chaplin Collection: Highly recommended
Any Chaplin fans out there?
I recently bought volume one.... with Modern times, The great dictator, The gold rush, and Limelight.. The packaging is great and they did a nice restoration of the gold rush...
I used to watch him as a kid at my grandparents house... They had all his movies...
That guy was a genius. His movies have a nice mix of comedy and sadness... It's amazing how he can tell a story without almost no words at all..... It's amazing that he wrote directed, acted, and composed the music in all his films....
The Great Dictator is in my top ten favorite movies.... Beautiful film....
:agree:

Yeah, these DVDs are better than any U.S. video release issued in the past. You can get them through Columbia House too. There's one irritating problem - the U.S. releases were made by converted PAL masters to NTSC or something like that. If you get the European counterparts and do a comparison, you can see things like ghosting artifacts. Nothing major but it's annoying they did it half-assed and didn't take the extra step of doing a transfer straight from the original materials. There's a website somewhere that goes into great detail.

It's worth seeking out the previous Image DVDs as well. They reflect the David Shepard restorations, and in the case of some of the films, reflect the original release versions. The Chaplin Collection editions reflect the cuts that Chaplin made later for subsequent releases. This affects A King in New York, A Woman of Paris, and probably a few others as well.
Regards,

I can't see ghosting.... I don't have a high rez projector... Just a normal tv... So it's harder to distinguish edge enhancement and all that crap..

The extra supplement discs are also really cool... I dig the historic details around each film.....

The documentary about the making of The Great Dictator is an astonishing eye-opener. It parallels the rise of Hitler with the career of Chaplin, so it's a great history lesson. But beyond that, there is incredible newly-found behind-the-scenes color footage of Chaplin directing it!!!! Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Yeah, Hitler and Chaplin were born within the same year, month, and week...
