View Full Version : CD Demagnatizing?
Is this possible? Does it make a difference?
Just met a guy who says it works! Sounds weird but possible to me! You can buy a demagnatizer, apparently.
Anyone know for sure?

I own a Bedini Clarifier - and it works. It allegedly realigns and polarizes molecules on disc surface allowing clearer better defined sound and greater soundstage... I'm not too sure about all that (sounds a bit suspect), BUT... regardless of what actually goes on behind the scenes (removes unwanted electrical charges?) ... it works. To avoid placebo I even brought some "non-audiophiles" in...and they did agree that sound was enhanced subsequent to use. I paid about $30 for the hand-held unit... not too bad.

I bought a video tape demagnetizer from Radio Shack for $20 to do the job.
Initial tests were positive, but the difference was very subtle. For a few months after getting it I had the demagnetizer out, and would do each disc before playing, but I got tired of that and ended up putting the machine in the cupboard. Now that it's out of sight it doesn't get used.
See if you can borrow one of these and check it out for yourself. This tweak has not been correctly explained in my opinion and generates a lot of controversy (which we all love, eh?)
Regards,
Geoff
Personally I don't consider a CD magnetized unless it sticks to the refrigerator!
;)
Gary,
The Zero-stat record demagnetizer works just as well, for way less money.
I think I have one of those, Dave..... somewhere. Might as well give it a shot! Or is that "a zap"? :D
Snake oil costs a pretty penny 'round these parts, so I'll pass on that idea, Grant. And those Mississauga rattlers get pretty ornery in the summer, too. ;)

I have a tape head demagnetizer that I use to maintain my cassette decks. I use this to demagnetize my cds. It didn't cost me anything extra and it works. I'll try anything, especially if the cost is next to nothing. It's fun. It's my hobby.
BTW, Have any of you used a system demagnetizing sweep disc?
Tullman,
Yes I use a system demagnetizing sweep disc and yes it does work (proven many times). Keep in mind that I do live in a semi-tropical rain forest enviroment and static electricity can be a bit of a problem at times.

Note that this thread has been split in two.
Please keep the discussion of merits here, and the debate on this tweak (and tweaks in general) here (

Thanks for your cooperation! :)

It's not a record demagnetizer. It is an anti-static "gun" for removing electrostatic charges.
