Okay,
I'll admit it....I love the show! The first season had good episodes like Smuggler's Blues. Love the clothes and the cars, Crockett and Tubbs.
But I have to bring this up again...we now have Miami Vice and Magnum PI...so where's Hawaii-Five-O on DVD?
Is there a problem that's causing this to continue MIA?

Jack Lord's estate, maybe? Good question....
But the VICE box is going to be great fun....:edthumbs:
This was one hell of a series. Never that big a fan of regular television viewing, VICE was the only show(other than HILL STREET BLUES)I watched religiously. Slick, cynical, it had its own vibe and pulse, and as preposterous as it often got, it got to me, as the X-FILES and BUFFY did in the '90s, and nothing has since.
IIRC, the first season wasn't broadcast in stereo, though I could be wrong about that. Hope they cleaned these up a bit, in syndication didn't look nor sound very good...

I wonder if they got licensing for all the songs they originally used, or if they substituted. I've heard that the Crime Story box set has a lot of the oldies replaced with generic music.

SpikeTV, I believe or TVLand, is running the first season of Miami Vice sometime next week. Miami Vice 1st season was broadcast in stereo(only the music) but most NBC stations weren't equipped for stereo broadcast yet. It was a Friday night pre-party ritual to watch Miami Vice. I hope all the music is still in place on the box set otherwise I may opt for the cable channel broadcasts.

The first season was indeed stereo. NBC was on the cutting edge with stereo broadcasting at the time. Our affiliate in El Paso, KTSM, was one of the first NBC stations to broadcast in stereo. No one I knew owned a stereo tv or VCR, not for several years. I really wanted one!
I have a couple of shows from the first season on VHS (issued through Columbia House) that are in stereo as well.
I believe it's all remixed in 5.1 for these DVDs.
I LOVED this show! I was 14 when it premiered and I thought it was the coolest thing since, I dunno, EVER!
I too wore "boat" shoes with no socks. It was an era of very smelly feet. Had Vans with no socks too. Yuck!
Anyway, this looks like a blast. I'll start dropping hints, the birthday is in a few months. :)

5.1? Uh-oh.....
If the original shows were broadcast in STEREO, that would mean, most likely, futzing to faux 5.1......
Well, I've a copy reserved.....

I was hoping they'd remix the whole thing from scratch, but that might be a very expensive proposition. Hopefully the original stereo tracks are an option.

EDIT: Amazon lists remixed 5.1 as the only "available audio tracks". Hope they did it right.

Rudy,
I found a Miami Vice Lounge website where this question is posed. The answer is that it will have the original music but remixed. Don't know how reliable this is....

...another for the collection!...this is good! In this case, remixing might be a good thing!

I loved that "Smugglers Blues" episode, and there was another that ended with "Brothers in Arms", about a wacko ex-cop who put a crime boss in a wall. That was a wild episode. Funny how one remembers stuff like this.

That's a good sign. The use of music made that show, IMHO.

And MANHUNTER, Mann's underrated and horrifying film that really is just an extension of VICE....
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was never the same for me again.....

That was a brilliant film. I haven't seen it in a long time but many of those scenes are engraved in my memory.

I still have the LDs of the pilot and the 2nd season "2 Hr Premier". It will be interesting to see if they changed anything for the DVD.

Folks,
Found a Miami Vice Home page with info on the DVDs. It looks promising as it will feature the original music albeit remixed.
Below is another link also listing the bonus feature. Well Hawaii-Five-O is still a no-show, but Miami Vice to me is the next best thing. I will be getting this and I am really excited!

Dan,
Along with the original PSYCHO...if this film, upon first viewing, does not take your sleep away, nothing can.....
The faux 5.1 soundtrack is useless, but has a lot of bottom when it needs it....

As per my previous post, it's TVLand that's running the Miami Vice marathon this weekend and it's all the shows. But they are not showing them in sequence.

Although some Vice eps could be considered 'bottle' installments that can air out of sequence, there was a running(sometimes subtle)narrative and evolution to the series, and for the most part, really need to be seen in order....

I couldn't agree more. There is a satisfying and rich world to the continuing story arcs and the development of the characters in this series and it does deserve to be watched in order.

Just went to pick up my copy....apparently there isn't much in the way of extras, but if this is well remastered, should be a joy! :edthumbs:
More later....

I remember the first two seasons for this show fondly, but it is only due to happenstance that the term "Jumping the shark" was not originally coined as "Blowing up the Spyder". :)
The Season One set seems to have only modest extras, but considering the minefield of music rights the producers likely negotiated, it is very impressive that they managed to achieve this release at all, let alone for a pretty reasonable price point ($60 MSRP, $33 at Best Buy this week).

I was impressed with the set. You do get some extras on disc one. They managed to utilize both sides of the discs, cutting the disc total to 3 and saving the consumer money. Each episode menu has a short summary, scene selection, etc and the air date. It is in stereo.
I will love this collection!

I forgot how influential this show really was. Yes, it owes much to MTV(particularly Duran Duran) but the last 10 minutes( the In The Air Tonigh montage with the Ferrari Daytona on the street) has shots now seen in every sports car commercial for the past 5 years.

Quite a bit darker than Vice and featuring the real screen Hannibal Lector (actor Brian Cox), not the more popular hammy Hopkins version.
The Ferrari Daytona was an obvious fake.
Any car fan would have spotted the Corvette windscreen frame a mile off.
:D
And those always droopy after-market door mirrors !
Vitaloni ?
Later series did feature a genuine Testarossa supplied by Ferrari NA, who took the fake Daytona maker to court.

I pretty well remember the episode when Ted Nugent (IIRC) blew the Daytona into oblivion with an anti aircraft missile. That scene - and especially Crockett's face - was priceless! Arielle Dombasle's t-shirt in the Perrier bowl was also a nice scene...
By the way: Isn't that "cool" emoticon nothing else than an hommage to Don Johnson?
