I bought this fine movie yesterday and when I tried to play the extended version, my DVD player would lock up and skip little bits of dialouge. I had to watch the theatrical cut and forgo the full musical performances.

It is frustrating to get a DVD and not be able to play everything on it. I hope Universal doesn't try to use this type of authoring again!

Yes, I had the same problem also. I've bought other DVD's that have this kind of feature but have not had this problem. Must be an authoring issue. I'll be taking back my copy, exchanging it and hoping for the best.

Sounds like your typical player conflict. It doesn't seem to happen quite as often anymore, but for awhile there, lots of newer DVD's that had features like branching, animated menus, or other newer technologies had trouble working on older DVD players (Toshiba and Sony were rather notorious for having conflicts with some DVD's).

In most cases, movie studios quietly would release corrected versions shortly after the problems started to pop up, and several would replace older copies with newer versions. You might want to search around the net to see if the problem is widespread, and if the studio is aware of it.

Sometimes though, I wonder if it's just a conspiracy to get people to keep buying newer DVD players every couple of years.

No. It's not a disc problem, it's a player problem and the disc is set up over the length of the movie to jump-place so sequentially the "extended cut" is what you see. The package AND the program before confirming your selection even states the disc may not play correctly in extended because some players do not understand "programmable positioning" in the files on the disc.

My two-year old JVC DVD-A and my 3 month old Koss crappy $40 DVD player both worked fine.....

Did you try it in another player? I have a few players just in case. It can be quite overwhelming when your favorite player doesn't play EVERYTHING! :)

Is this one of those Infinity DVD's?

These are on the second disc, so you can see them there. The Extended Cut worked fine on my Panasonic, though it's not a smooth way to watch the flick...

That means they issued two versions, a double disc set and a dual-sided set, like I got.

Doesn't the double-sided one have all the same extras on the flipside?

Just watched RAY and it skipped even in the theatrical version. Bad disc, I will take it back today.

I haven't put it in my Denon player yet. The so-called extended version was crap on my Sony DVP-S9000ES. The extended footage was all window-boxed and grungy looking. To say this is an extended version is what, fraudulent or somethin'!? I switched to the theatrical version. It's long enough...

I played the DVD in my LiteOn DVD burner in my computer, and it did the same damn thing as it did in our Sony DVD player in the living room.

The person who made the decision to use this technology on such a major release should have their little toe shot off!

Like I said in my previous post, I had problems with the RAY DVD even watching the theatrical version. I returned it for the DVD of CROSSROADS, the new Eric Clapton concert. I also emailed Universal.

Mine played smoothly in the theatrical version. Mine was the double which was a dual layer disc (DVD9) and a single layer bonus disc (DVD5).

Maybe it's only with flippers?

Mine was a flipper disc, 2 sided disc.

I played a rental copy on my old Phillips DVD player, and I guess it worked OK. I could hear the player clunking away even when the extended play icon (music notes) weren't displayed on the screen.

Also, the extended scenes had more vivid color than the theatrical version!

I started watching it on my living room set, and it was letter boxed. After a while, we decided to watch the rest in bed (using a newer DVD player). I used the scene selections to get to where I left off, but for some reason, it wasn't letterboxed. I didn't bother to figure out why, I wasn't in the mood to fiddle with the remote and settings, etc. I just thought that this would be a good place to moan about it!

I hope you all realize that this Is The Studio's fault for doing a Shoddy job on the "extended" version for the disc, color timing is off, the extended scenes aren't even anamorphic. Shame on You Universal, Shame On You! :thumbsdn:

I started to watch the extended version, but after quickly seeing how it was done I stopped and just watched the theatrical version. Its really down right stupid to switch from anamorphic to letterbox and back again when the extended scenes are inserted. Its unwatchable on a 16:9 display. I can't imagine how anyone could have approved such a piece of crap.
