Haven't decided yet who I think will win in all of the major categories, but here's who I'd like to win.

Best Pic - Sideways
Best Director - Alexander Payne
Best Actor - Don Cheadle
Best Actress - Kate Winslet
Supporting Actor - Clive Owen or Thomas Haden Church
Supporting Actress - Virginia Madsen

Unfortunately I suspect most of my picks won't be the Academy's choices. They'll probably give Aviator best pic/director and Jamie Foxx best Actor for Ray, which I saw the other day and thought was a so-so movie.

I'm hoping Sideways cleans up. It's my movie of the year.

Where is Paul Giamatti? What does it take for him to get nominated???? Leo should be booted off the list for having mearly a solid preformance in the most over-rated movie of the year.

But he did the obligatory "hand washing" scene so well! :D ;)

Not likely to happen, but it'd be interesting to see Jamie Foxx win for both Best Actor and Supporting Actor.

Surprised to see Ray in the Best Picture category. Great performance by Foxx, great music of course, but the film is right out of "Biopic Moviemaking 101."

Neither Hero nor House of Flying Daggers in the Foreign Language category? I admit I haven't seen any of the nominated films, but I can't imagine them being better than either of those two.

Kill Bill, Vol. 2 is completely shut out. Arghhhh!

I'm a bit dissapointed because "The Alzheimer Affair" didn't make it in the Foreign Language category, especially since Sony Classics bought the distribution rights for the US yesterday for quite some $$$$$……

Anyway so be it….. Watch it if you can… Worth its money…. :righton:

Yeah that sucks. Uma should have been nominated at least. She was great in those movies.

I'd definitely be happy to see Jamie Foxx win Best Actor, but in the Supporting Actor category, I really feel Morgan Freeman is long overdue to win. I'm quite surprised also that Paul Giamatti wasn't nominated.

Regarding your comment about "Ray" being right out of "Biopic Moviemaking 101", you are right. Taylor Hackford is also responsible for one of my favorite films "The Idolmaker"(his first film as a director), and he produced "La Bamba". So he definitely knows how to do those kind of movies with the kind of detail that makes em great.

Since The Aviator has 11 nominations, 4 more than the next film, it is almost a shoo-in for Best Picture statistically. The film with the most nominations doesn't always win, but it does when it's this far ahead of the rest (+3 or more). Let's face it, the Academy has been jonesing to give Scorsese some recognition for a long time. He should win for Best Director, too, although everyone really wants to point out the incredible work Clint Eastwood has done two years in a row.

I can't see anyone but Jamie Foxx winning for Best Actor, either. His moving speech at the Golden Globes endeared him to a huge amount of people. He's a shoo-in, too.

If I had to put my money down on Best Actress, I'd probably go with Hilary Swank, although "two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank" doesn't sound right. She has two great performances to her credit, but her career has been pretty spotty otherwise. A lot is being made about her showdown with Annette Bening, but no one has seen Being Julia, so she won't win. Imelda Staunton is the dignified choice, and you can't underestimate the Academy's love for all things British, which is why I won't be surprised if Kate Winslet wins, because people really like her a lot in the industry. Then again, don't be surprised if Catalina Sandino Moreno wins. I call it the Adrien Brody Factor...if confronted with a field of accomplished veterans, vote for the newcomer. This category is really up in the air.

I think Virginia Madsen is a lock for Supporting Actress, and Thomas Haden Church is the front-runner for Supporting Actor, but lately these two categories have been very unpredictable. I can see Morgan Freeman winning because people can't believe he hasn't won one already (he was the front-runner in 1989 for Best Actor and lost to Daniel Day-Lewis).

Thomas Haden Church is the front-runner for Supporting Actor,

Someone from the cast of "Wings" with an Oscar? *shudder*

I disagree - I think that was the year many thought it would go to Tom Cruise for "Born on the Fourth of July". In my memory, at least, he was seen as the front-runner...

Until he does a sympathetic performance of an insane character...
...now wait a minute...
Anyway, I hope Sideways cleans up.

shoulda been 1 movie w/intermission; may yet be.

having two movies (and the far better one being first) pretty much screwed the pooch.

No. The Lord Of The Rings was over last year.

In the writing credits (everyone's fave, right?) I'd take Sideways in Adapted and Eternal Sunshine (underrepresented in these nominations, if'n you ask me) in Original.

Haven't seen Sideways or Million Dollar Baby yet, but I'm just hoping The Aviator doesn't clean up.

I don't understand this sentiment at all. Granted, it's always more fun when the Oscars are more evenly distributed, and granted that it may be Scorsese's "time" to receive a much deserved Oscar, but the fact remains that The Aviator is one fine film. If Scorsese gets Best Director, then there is comfort in knowing he is getting it for some of his better, if not best work. It still haunts me that Paul Newman got his Oscar for The Color of Money, Dustin Hoffman for Kramer vs Kramer, and Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. In the ever-evolving CGI world of modern filmmaking, Scorsese remains one of the few remaining "organic" directors.

I enjoyed Sideways and Ray very much, and I am looking forward to Million Dollar Baby. If The Aviator cleans up, though, I will be happy. :edthumbs:

I am glad that 'Finding Neverland' did so well in the nominations. IMHO probably the best film of 2004 and it might finally get the audience that it deserves.
