What will be the audio stardard?

Seeing how fast technology changes...I would vote for None Of The Above. We'll probably be storing things on chips and crystals.

I don't even have a clue what it will be in 5 years let alone 10 years!

Probably MP451..........1,000,000 songs that fit on the head of a pin, but hey, the kids'll buy it . That's all that really matters isn't it?

Micro Chips.

Just think about it, the entire collected works of the Beatles in both Mono and Stereo on one chip, that you just plug in to your implanted memory controller.

Hey! Who are the two jokers who voted for the cylander? Fess up!:D

Anything that's backward compatible has my vote! That's one of the reasons why I like SACD for now.

Formats will change. Music will change. SACD is quite a bandwith licker. DVD ISO development is to blame.

The next format will be dictated from the storage the next disc format can hold. An SACD is really a DVD being told things a bit differently.

I didn't vote for cylinder - but as the old saying goes -

"What goes around, comes around" - They just might be right.:D

What is missing from the poll - and might, just might, be the audio standard in 10 years will be a computer chip that we plug right into a socket we have wired into our heads. :D :D :D :D

No matter what format wins out, the LP will still be around in 10 years.

So will the regular CD!:D Yes. And it is a good thing that CD, DVD and SACD all come in the same size so that we will at least be able to buy combo players. I don't think you can buy a new LD player anymore. :(

I agree that the older formats will still be around. There are still so many people who feel that vinyl sounds better than any digital source, so the LP has a lot of life left. (By the way, I'm not one of those people, but I do LOVE my vinyl.)

As much as I want SACD to succeed, I just don't see people clamoring for an improvement over CD. There are far more people moving down the resolution ladder and listening to MP3 files than upgrading to SACD.

Vinyl will remain a solid, niche market. I think DVD-A will fail.

SACD's backward-compatability with CD just may give it enough market share to become standard. I think Sony's plan to issue dual-layer discs is very smart, assuming they work out the potential incompatability problems with older CD players. Maybe.

Retailers will strongly resist duplicate inventory (see how fast they're dumping VHS), especially when the differences between CDs, SACDs, and DVD-As are not readily apparent to an uninformed consumer. WalMart, Target, etc., are not returning to the dark days of carrying duplicate inventory on vinyl, cassette, and CD.

Hit Clips. The hottest musical device. The kids can't get enough of these. 1 minute songs for the shortest attention spans!

This is the future of music is here now!

(BTW, I voted for the 78 just to be annoying. I don't think there will ever be a 'standard' like the LP or CD. Too many options, the market is way too fragmented. Downloads will be more and more popular, but won't 'dominate'. Just a guess)

Well, they are mono for the 'back to mono' crowd.;)
But yeah, ugly bad stuff. And the prices! Let's hope this is a novelty only.

I suspect the Beatles, Stones and Beach Boys "Master Tapes" will always be on tape ;)

In terms of digital removable storage devices - something with a form factor of about 1 inch square and a couple of credit cards width should be holding a terabyte or more. I suspect "music on demand" delivery systems will be more commonplace and have bandwidths in the hundereds of megabits to gigabit range.

I may be just guessing;)

I hope that I will still have all my vinyl and the facilities to appreciate it (along with all the other formats) - whatever the format I am sure Steve will still do a great Mastering job on it :)

All the best - Andrew

I don't think you are right, Sir. With the electricity market in brown / black out mode across North America as corporations increase their profits, the apocalypse coming closer and closer, I think a hand cranked cylinder is the only form of pre recorded music that will exist.

But don't worry. We have ten whole years.... or less. :(
