The average consumer is going to go with more space, because they think the picture quality is high enough. Question is, is Blu-ray backwards compatible with standard DVD? Will people go for buying a new incompatible player? Will they rebuy all their favorites on another format just because it holds more?

HD-DVD seems more sensible to me as far as probable backward compatability is concerned. And, I don't know if the picture quality is improved over Blu-ray, but if it is, it's certainly a factor to consider.

Sony and Phillips have a history of putting out incompatible formats that are ultimately doomed. What's 20 lousy gigs if compatability and possible higher picture quality is possible? And, it's cheaper for all of the industry to produce HD.

Yeah, I think Blu-ray, with my knowledge of the format, is a bad move. Sometimes there are more important things than just having more space.

Independent Film, Beta/VHS, cable television, the video rental industry,DVD, and the internet were certainly all largely made possible by porn. Too bad we aren't so aurally stimulated - your wish for SA-CD and DVD-A might have come true.
