Hello, brand new to this excellent forum so excuse me if this subject has been covered already - I did go back a few pages but couldn't find it, so my question to Steve is:

What is your opinion of the new Dolby Pro Logic II processing for listening to stereo CD's? With a sizeable collection of conventional stereo CD's, I have no plans to switch over to SACD or DVD-A anytime soon and I'm thinking of purchasing a receiver that has DPL II (in addition to DSP and Dolby Digital) so I was wondering about your thoughts on DPL II for music-listening. Thanks.

I know it works great for older Movies that don't have Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. That is its main function in Dolby Digital Recievers built for Home Theaters.

I would imagine that if you like Multi-Channel music, it would sound pretty cool. But would no way be as good as real DVDA Multi-Channel or SACD Multi-Channel.

It probably would fall under cool but gimmicky when applied to music.

It works better than Pro Logic and provides a feed to your dedicate sub. I use it for TV and some CD playback,

Pro Logic II works very simular to the old Sanui Vario Matrix QS decoders. It is able to generate a pretty good multi channel image out of Stereo Source material and is able to decode old QS recordings excellently. If you buy one, try to find Ray Thomas' (of the Moody Blues) solo CD "FROM MIGHTY OAKS" it is a QS recording and sounds outstanding played back through a PL II receiver.

I have been wondering if DPL II would decode old quad records. From the sound of your post, I may be in luck. I have a sizeable collection (for me) of both SQ and QS records, and it would be nice to have a new piece of equipment that would recover the multi-channel info. By the way, another great sounding LP from that era that decodes well on my QS decoder (even though it wasn't released in Quad) is "Blue Jays" by Justin Hayward and John Lodge, also of the Moody Blues.
