There are five The Who titles reissued by MoFi.
Tommy
Quadrophenia
Who Are You
Live At Leeds
Who's Next

Did I miss any? With the exception of Who's Next, none of these are listed in "the Offical Steve Hoffman discography". Sonically, what's your experience with the MCA aluminum (many different versions?) vs. MSFL gold.

It is said that Live At Leeds never sounds good anyway. My German pressing vinyl seems to confirm that. It could be the master tape.

Steve,

Any plan to show "Who's Best in Remastering the Who", either CD or vinyl? I am not aware of you involvement with the recent Universal reissues. Will these affect your ability to obtain licenses.

Paul,

Perhaps I can help you,

The MCA aluminums all aren't very good (false colorization, too much compression, very sterile sounding), with the exception of Steve's version.

The MFSL "Who's Next was done from a safety copy and not the original master, unlike Steve's version, and doesn't even come close to Steve's version.

Hope this helps.;)

Who's Next wasn't simply done from a safety. It was done from a digital tape given to them by Jon Astley, which was a combo of remixes and remasters from non-master sources.

Same thing for Leeds. It's the same remix as the 1995 CD. Sonics are fine, but I really don't like the mix. The only way I can listen to that concert is the bootleg, which is complete. The recording itself is great - some nasty crackling noises, but other than that...

Ahhh.......the expert returneth.;)

Well it's good to see ya Luke.

Lot's of questions on this forum that you'd be better to answer than I, as no doubt your memory works better than mine.:p

Luke has in the past address the problems with the MFSL Who's Next.

To show it was from the tape Astley gave them is the fact that Won't Get Fooled Again has the same sonic distrortion in Daltrey's final scream. The original multitracks were found after the MCA reissue and used on the My Generation best-of.

MFSL should have used it for Who's Next but used the original Astley tape.

Correct me, Luke, if I misquoted you here!

Well, the real kicker is that if you play the two back side by side they stay in perfect sync. Bit for bit. I don't think the individual bits are exactly the same, but they are in the same spots...

Wasn't it also one of the releases in MCA's shortlived "gold" program?
