I first saw the 'Star Wars' movies in a video trilogy that one of my friends had bought. They were the restored versions with the added scenes and newer and improved special effects. I like these versions of the 'Star Wars' movies best since it's what I remember seeing for the first time. The old versions don't really do much for me because of this (all apologies to all of those SW purists out there)

Is the old restoration anything like the new DVD restoration?
Was there anything in the old restoration that's not in the new one (or vice-versa)?

The DVDs are the Special Editions with the new special effects redone again. Use the forum search to find the previous threads about this. There was a thread that went over this in great detail.

This is a good example of some of the cultural backlash created when Lucas took his 'Special Editions' road. Different generations will not have the same experience watching these films. Taste, style, and appreciation change from generation to generation but the nice thing about art is that it "usually" ages and remains true to itself through the passage of time. People can read into it what they will. Lucas has taken that away from the original trilogy.
