Last night I picked up a 2ch stereo SACD of 'Thriller' and it's mastered by Bernie Grundman ($10.99 @ Discorama on West 4th St). I read the posts from yesterday again and Steve said the "old" SACD. How many releases of this title so far? What's the story?

Hey Todd:

How often do you shop at 'Rama? It's my home away from home. Maybe I'll see ya in there sometime!!

Jimbo,

I've been shopping at Discorama since the late 80's (it used to be a great "secret" source for Ticketmaster/no lines & cheap CD's, especially box sets). Lately, I try to stop by the West 4th Street location every other week or so to look around on my way home (usually Wednesdays). If I'm in the Union Square Park area and I have time, I take a quick look around. Last night I picked up the 'Thriller' SACD for cheap but I forgot to get a 10% off coupon from the Pennysaver newspaper they keep in the front (I was distracted/$10.99's still a great price). They still have a few Gold CD's left (even MFSL's). Remember when they had tons of Gold CD's for $17.99 or 2 for $35?

But the question remains -- how many versions of the 'Thriller' SACD are there?

Very true, Krabapple (but I think Steve read very successfully between the lines of my post). So, how many are there?

To the best of my knowledge, the "old" SACD is the current one, and the only one. There is going to be a new Thriller SACD with a multichannel version.

Thanks, Petzi! I thought this was the case but I was confused earlier today. I just wanted to make sure I got the one (which is the only one at this time until the stereo/MC one comes out) mentioned yesterday. Thanks again...

Ha!

Didn't realize the new mix wasn't out yet.

Got a test of it last month...

Sorry, campers!

Me no talk.

Besides, I've heard it's been changed several more times since this test.

Yes, the story is that MJ went through many multichannel remixes before he settled on one, finally. MJ also went through tons of SACD multi-channel remixes for his other Epic albums but couldn't decide on any of them. I understand Sony will not release any others, not only because MJ has not approved them, but they are going through the other thing discussed on the other MJ thread on this forum.

I don't have an SACD player (yet) but i'm going to buy that current "Thriller" disc before it is no longer available. I have always believed that no medium has ever captured the master tape sound of "Thriller" properly. The reasons are unclear. Maybe when I hear the 2-ch SACD I will come away with a different opinion of this album, which I have always considered to be kind of weak, compared to "Off The Wall".

Coupons?? We don't need no stinking coupons!! ;) I've been a regular at Discorama (W. 4th St.) since 1990. I'm there like clockwork, every Tuesday and Friday during my lunch hour. Gotten to be very friendly with the staff, the manager gives me the "Jimbo discount" on all purchases--and I give them plenty of business! Nice to be appreciated! Great prices on new CDs, and pretty good on DVDs too. I always check out the Collectors Case for interesting promos and imports.

I snapped up a bunch of gold CDs there over the years, especially when MoFi announced they were going under. They were charging me $15 flat. Spent a lot of money!

I used to go there for tickets as well--you're right, few people knew they had a Ticketmaster. Too bad it's not there anymore.

If you're in the 'hood any Tues. or Fri. about 1PM, do drop in! Ask for Jimbo!
