Has anyone picked this one up yet? How does the mono mix on the new remaster compare to the mono De Capo tracks on the Rhino Love Story compilation? Also, I've never heard De Capo in stereo. How's the mix? More enjoyable than the mono?
Thanks,
Chris

Yeah, I don't have it yet (I'm really helpful today, ne?) but this is what I've heard:
Firstly, the Rhino version of the mono Da Capo is fine, I think. I can't see much improvement being possible. That said, the earlier Self-Titled reissue absolutely sparkled, so I doubt this one sounds shabby.
The thing is, if you have both Love Story and the Comes in Colors comp (which has the stereo mix of side 1 of Da Capo), all you're getting is two Revelations and a tracking session of 7 and 7 is (which was most likely the same thing...or shorter...that appeared on the must-have LAst Wall of the Castle bootleg).
So, to answer your question, if you don't already have the stereo mix, I'm willing to bet that this reissue's fine, and will suit your needs perfectly.
With regard to "better/worse," the stereo mix is just *different*. More flute on Orange Skies, different instrument mixing on Comes in Colours....etc.
HTH.

Cool. Since I don't have the stereo mix I guess I'll have to pick it up. About the Last Wall of the Castle boot....what are the highlights of the disc in your opinion. Does it have any Forever Changes tracks with extended fade outs? I'd kill to hear The Red Telephone that doesn't fade out....

Last Wall is a definate oddity...frankly, I believe it was compiled from "maybes" that were supposed to go on the new, expanded reissues. For example, it had Wonder People right before Forever Changes came out, had some of the tracking sessions, had some of the vocal-less tracks, et cetera. Listenability might not be too high, but you can't find some fo this stuff anywhere else.
I don't recall if it had longer fade-out versions, but it DOES have significantly-alternate mixes of several of the Forever Changes tuens, as well as instrumental versions of several tracks and quite a few tracking sessions (for example, 7 and 7 is, etc.)

Just got the Euro "Da Capo" reissue. Quality is comprable to the mono/stereo CD of the first Love album. Plenty of authentic
tape hiss where appropriate so the "no-noise" overkill problem that many
UK discs suffer from is not an issue. Great liner notes and photos too, plus a great outtake from the "7&7 Is" tracking session. I haven't played it against the relevant session cuts on the "Last Wall" bootleg, but it sounds to me like there's more studio chatter on the 'legal' version. Does anyone know if this comes with a slipcase like the CD of the first album did? Mine didn't have one when I bought it. By the way, there are TWO different slipcase design variations for the first album cd. Just now found that out when I compared someone else's copy with mine...

Any of you Love lovers ever hear of early 1970's Quad mixes of "Forever Changes" and "De Capo"? Done by Ron Malo or Dave H. at RCA, Hollywood?

Quad mixes? Holy cow! How would/could these transfer to the SACD format? I'd break down and buy a player if these two were available...

I don't recall any such Quad mixes in the '70s on the Love albums. Best bet would be to check the Quad Catalog web site at
http://personal.riverusers.com/~manderso/quaddisc/quaddisc.htm It lists all of the Quad releases and planned releases from the '70s - based on the "Quad Incorporated" catalog written by Larry Clifton back in the '70s.

As impressive as Mark Anderson's quad discography is, don't rely on it as a definitive and correct list. There are many errors and a few ommissions.
However, I'm fairly certain that no Love albums were released in quad. There may exist quad mixes that were never released or perhaps test pressings of potential quad discs, but I don't believe there was anything commercially released.
Still, I'd sure like to see these released on multi-channel DVD-A or SACD!

As far as I've seen, Anderson's web site is the most comprehensive such list of the '70s era Quad material on the web.
But I would agree that there's always room for more Multichannel SACD albums! :)
Oh yes, Mark's list is the place to look, for sure! I'm just saying that just because it isn't listed, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I've not seen "Da Capo" in a slipcase here in the UK. Funny since "Love" and "Forever Changes" had the slipcases. Maybe WSM realised the environmental implications and decided to ditch the slipcase?

I need some edjumacatin' -
I recently purchased "Forever Changes" , and it has grown on me pretty big. It's nobody's fault but mine that I never heard it before this year. So I have something to rediscover for the first time (kinda like being a virgin all over again). I have heard that other Love albums have a harder edge than Forever. As someone who truly loves that album, is De Capo reccomended?

For me, Love was three bands. The first, kind of a punk Byrds type of band with the "My Little Red Book" LP. Neat album. Takes me back!
The second, kind of more "flower power" like, with longer songs, more instruments, overdubs, etc. Second album "De Capo". Has a great punk like song on it called "7 And 7 Is". Great hearing it on the radio in the summer of '66.
The third Love for me was the "Forever Changes" era Love. Some original members left and studio musicians (like Hal Blaine) played on several of the songs. A lot of acoustic instruments, way ahead of it's time. "Alone Again Or" was the hit.
After the LSD took over the remaining band members, for me Love became "Love drugs" and the later stuff didn't move me too much.
So, you have the best album, but the first two are worth getting, but don't expect anything like "Forever Changes". That album was unique!
Just my 4 cents!

You might want to check out Love Story for an excellent 2 Cd intro to Love.
Does contain all of Forever Changes, though. Decent sound.

My favorite is #3 Alone Again Or...era, Is it just me or does "Alone Again Or..have a "Moody Blues" feel to it? Although I don't know who influenced who?

The trumpet player on "Alone Again Or" is Jack Sheldon.

Would he be responsible for the Spanish feel of the break? Is Sheldon known for that?

He played what Arthur Lee told him to play I guess.
Kind of like a Brian Wilson type deal...

I may be alone on this one but I also feel that Love fourth album Four Sail has some great tracks but coming after their high point with Forever Changes kinda got panned. I believe that I recently read that the UK will be finally be issuing it. IMO the UK has done a better job with their first to albums than Rhino did with FC. There does not seem to be any use of NR on them and I like having the Mono and Stereo versions on the same disk.
Because it wasn't previously mentioned, I would like to say that the Boot the Last Wall inaddition to offering great sound, contains an awesome booklet.
Steve, were you speculating on the Quad mixes or do you know if they were actually made. I've been collecting Quad lp's since the seventies and have never heard mention of any Love material even being prepared for Quad release. I would love to see FC get a DVD-A release if multi-channel tapes were perpared and maybe now with Arthur out of jail they could coax him into a release.
